Skylark Blu-ray Review – 1941 Claudette Colbert Gem Shines on High Definition

In the early days of Hollywood romantic screwball comedy were big business. Audiences seemed to not be able to get enough of this type of film experience. One of audience's favorites was Claudette Colbert.

In 1934 she starred alongside Clark Gable in one of the best romantic comedies ever "It happened one night". Then in 1941 she starred in a love triangle with Ray Milland and Brian Aherne in Skylark. Now Universal Home Entertainment have released this classic comedy on Blu-ray!

Synopsis: Lydia Kenyon is frustrated by the behavior of her insensitive, workaholic husband, Tony. When she finally loses her temper and leaves, Lydia soon finds herself in the arms of her handsome divorce lawyer. Just when it seems that she will live happily ever after with her new suitor, her husband asks her to say "I do" to his proposition to begin a new life together in South America.

Skylark is a comedy from a different time A more innocent time in cinema. Boy how I love this kind of cinema. Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland and Brian Aherne deliver wonderful performances. The writing is fast-paced and the comedy is timeless.

Universal Home Entertainment have transferred Skylark to Blu-ray in 1080p and in presented in 1.37:1. The audio track is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

There is no indication on the package that this film has been restored. But none the less he film still looks and sound tremendous in High Definition. The picture is crisp and clean, and the audio is clear. The film really benefits from the HD experience. 

Now for bonus features. I am saddened to say there is not any on this disc. There is not an audio commentary, a featurette, not even a trailer. That is shame. For me bonus features are what make physical media better than streaming as you get bonuses not found anywhere else.

Skylark is a wonderful screwball comedy, with unforgettable performances. And when you think there is no streaming service that has this film currently, to have it on Blu-ray at a moment's notice to be able to experience again and again is a great thing.
