1982: The Greatest Geek Year Ever! (2023) Blu-ray Review

When I think of best cinema years throughout history, I usually think 1939, 1955 or 1974. It wasn't until this new Blu-ray release "1982: The Greatest Geek Year Ever" from MVD Rewind Collection, did I realize how absolutely amazing 1982 really was. It was undoubtable the best year for cinema, but also for many other form of media as well.

I am a huge fan of the MVD Rewind Collection Blu-rays. MVD really puts the detail into these Blu-ray giving them the retro feel. I loved the releases of Double Dragon and Swamp Thing and The Return of Swamp Thing. So, I am glad this new Documentary was released by MVD Rewind!

Synopsis: 1982: GREATEST GEEK YEAR EVER! is an epic documentary about the greatest geek year in films, 1982, featuring stars, directors, writers, producers and pop culture historians sharing their insights about such legendary movies as E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Blade Runner, John Carpenter's The Thing, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, Creepshow, Night Shift, The Dark Crystal, 48 Hours, First Blood, Tron, Conan The Barbarian, Cat People, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, The Road Warrior, and much, much more.

This was originally produced as a 4 part docuseries. It premiered on the CW Network on July 8, 2023. This series was not just people talking. These documentary series features exclusive interviews, rare behind-the-scenes footage and never-before-seen clips. The documentary features interview with Ron Howard, Paul Schrader, John Sayles, Amy Heckerling, Henry Winkler, William Shatner, Sean Young, Joanna Cassidy, Keith David, Cameron Crowe, Michael Deeley, Lisa Henson, Dean Devlin, Bruce Campbell, Dee Wallace, Felicia Day, Susan Seidelman, Roger Corman, Barry Bostwick, Marc Singer, Bryan Fuller, Leonard Maltin, Mike Medavoy and more!

The four parts have been seamlessly pieced together. The full documentary runs about 2 and a half hours. Now I know that sounds like a lot, but it is so well produced that time literally flies by when watching it. I loved the fact that this documentary covers not only movies, but tv, video games and more.  

This documentary has been transferred to Blu-ray presented in 1080p and in 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio. The audio track is an English LPCM 5.1 Surround. There is also the option for English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The transfer of this documentary to Blu-ray is crisp and clean. There is not digital artifacts or audio anomalies. But a wonderful crisp copy of this documentary is not all that MVD included in this release. Take a look at the bonus features included on this Blu-ray!

The audio commentaries are great the deleted and extended scenes are a nice bonus, and the Comic-Con Panel is always a lot of fun to check out. I appreciate "The Fans Speak" featurette, but in all honesty, some shot these videos on a phone, and they don't look spectacular. But that is a very minor complaint.
