The Lords of Flatbush (1974) Blu-ray Review

In 1974 before Sylvester Stallone would change the sport movie game with his film Rocky, he was Stanley. And before Henry Winkler would embody cool with the character Fonzie, he was Butchey. These two are members of a Brooklyn gang of teenagers in the film “The Lords of Flatbush”.

The film is now celebrating its golden anniversary. It's hard to believe The Lords of Flatbush is 50 years old. Sony Picture Home Entertainment has given this cult classic a Blu-ray release.

Synopsis
: Clad in blue jeans, black leather jackets and bad attitudes, Stanley (Stallone), Butchey (Winkler), Chico (Perry King) and Wimpy (Paul Mace) are a 1950s Brooklyn gang of four cool, sexy rebels. Despite their rough appearance, these boys just want to have fun, but reality - aka adulthood - rears its ugly head when Stanley's steady informs him they have to get married, and blue collar Chico falls for a beautiful blonde (Susan Blakely) from the right side of the tracks.

In The Lords of Flatbush we see something that we see in most films, actors in their 20s and 30s playing teenagers. This can be a bit distracting to some viewers, but once you get into the film you will forget all about that.

Stallone and Winkler were made for these roles, they really shine. And it is something to behold seeing Sly singing. WOW! That is worth watching this film for alone. But the screenplay is well written, and all the acting is believable. While not the level of American Graffiti it is a enjoyable hour and a half cinematic experience from your couch.

I grew up on shows like Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley and movies like Rebel without a Cause, The Wild One and American Graffiti. The 1950s just seemed like such a cool time to live. I feel sometimes I missed out on living in one of the best eras of history. But I can relive that era with films and TV that embrace that decade.

The Lords of Flatbush has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p. The film is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The Audio is an English DTS-HD Master track. There is also the option for Subtitles in English, French, Spanish.

The transfer is a clean one. There is no damage that I could see to this print. The picture is crisp. No digital artifacts or audio anomalies are found. But sadly this is not a restored version of the film. For the 50th anniversary, it would have been nice to see a restoration. But it is still a nice-looking transfer anyway.

As for bonus features the only bonus included here is a trailer. I really wished for the 50th anniversary of this film's release that we could have received interviews with Stallone and Winkler. I bet they have many memories to share about this film. That would have taken this Blu-ray to a whole new level.

If you love those films that are based on the 1950s you need the Blu-ray of The Lords of Flatbush in your collection. Head over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy of this Blu-ray today!
