in 2020 The McManus Brothers brough the horror film "The Block Island Sound" that is not just any horror film. It is a horror film that harkens back to those atmospheric slow burn horror movies of yesteryear. Now Synapse Films have released this film on 4K UltraHD.
Synopsis: Something terrifying is happening off the coast of Block Island. A strange force is thriving, influencing residents and wildlife alike. Birds are dropping out of the sky and fish are mysteriously washing up on shore. As some residents are suffering from inexplicable emotional collapse, Harry Lynch (Chris Sheffield, The Stanford Prison Experiment) watches with dread as his father grows increasingly forgetful, confused and angry. Very, very angry! His sister Audry (Michaela McManus, Into the Grizzly Maze, TV's The Orville), whose work in marine biology will soon prove invaluable, returns to town with her daughter and leads them all towards chilling revelations that will affect her family in unimaginable ways.
The Block Island Sound is a low budget horror film, but its strength is in the story, amazing character development and atmosphere that builds the suspense through the film till the end scene. It doesn't rely on special effects, but real-life family drama to bring the terror, and does a great job at it at that.
The film runs at a slow pace, but that is to help build the characters and thus making them people we care for in this film. Now for slasher fans that like kills a minute, they may not appreciate the slow burn horror here. But if you're a fan of those old classic horror film, you are going to be in 7th heaven with this film.
Synapse Films have transferred this film to 4K UltraHD in 2160 and is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Finally, there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This transfer to 4K is pristine. The picture is crisp and clean with no digital artifacts and no audio anomalies. In all the time I have been reviewing Synapse Films releases I have never been disappointed, and I am not here. The picture quality is spectacular. but a gorgeous transfer is not all that this release has going for it. Take a look at what is included as bonus features.
