Crocodile (1978) Synapse Films Blu-ray

Synapse Films have been releasing cult classic creature features. I really enjoyed the opportunity to review the Blu-ray releases of The Kindred and Creature from the Black Lake. I have been itching for another cool creature feature! Well, the wait is over!

In 1978 there was an Asian horror/monster movie produced by Chaiyo Productions. The film was released in the United States under the title Crocodile Fangs. Synapse Films have released this film on Blu-ray under the title Crocodile.

Synopsis
: There is a giant crocodile on the loose! Mutating and getting larger possibly because of an atomic explosion, the crocodile's thirst for blood also grows as it rampages through a small quiet beach town devouring anything in its path.

Dr. Akom and Dr. Stromm are on a perfect family vacation, but it takes a tragic turn when three of their loved ones suddenly disappear. When the bodies are found, the two doctors conduct a thorough examination of the remains and discover a killer crocodile is the culprit. Teaming up with Tanaka, a tough and rugged fisherman, Akom and Stromm head out to dangerous open waters to find and destroy the beast once and for all!

There have been tons of atomic age creature features over the years. Films like Godzilla, Mothra, Tarantula, The Giant Gila Monster, and Them. Crocodile use "mother nature rebels" angle for this film. The Crocodile continues to grow and needs more to food. Thus he feeds on the mankind that have been destroying the world.

Now let's be honest here Crocodile is a film that is trying to catch some of the buzz of the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Jaws that came out a couple years before. But before we are too harsh with this film realize there were a lot of filmmakers that made aquatic monster movies to cash in on the Jaws craze.

The acting is passable. The direction is good. But this is a low budget creature feature! So producers uses the less is more approach to build tension in this film. Which is probably smart. But when they did use creature effects, they were pretty bad. You have probably heard the term "so bad it's good." Well, Crocodile falls in that category.

Synapse Films has transferred this creature feature to Blu-ray in 1080p and presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD MA Lossless English 2.0 Mono Audio. There is the option for the newly translated English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Now I have to say Synapse Films have done a tremendous job with this film. For a low budget creature feature from the late 1970s this film looks sensational on Blu-ray. The colors are gorgeous and the picture is sharp with no damage to this print that I could see. The audio is clear with no hiss or pops. Simply amazing! But that is not all that is included here. Check out the bonus features included on this disc.

* Audio commentary with film historian Lee Gambin

* Video interview with original director Won-se Lee

* Original theatrical trailer

* Deleted and alternate scenes

Synapse Films did it again bringing creature feature fans a Blu-ray that is a must own for your Blu-ray collection. As a special warning this film does include brief nudity and a horrific carving up of a real crocodile. That was extremely hard to watch!
