The Questor Tapes (1974) Blu-ray Review

Gene Roddenbury is most known as the creator of one of the most iconic Universes in TV and movie history. Of course, I am talking about Star Trek! That simple creation of 3 seasons would go on to see movies, spin off TV series, reboots, streaming series and more.

While Gene Roddenbury is known most for that (and it's understandable) he did create other movies and TV shows. One such iconic film was the made-for-tv film from 1974 entitled The Questor Tapes. Now this 70s TV film has received a deluxe Blu-ray release from KL Studio Classics.

Follow the incredible journey of one seemingly superhuman android as he attempts to find his creator in Gene Roddenberry’s fascinating sci-fi telefilm, The Questor Tapes, from the visionary minds behind Star Trek. Project Questor (Robert Foxworth, Ants!, The Black Marble) is cutting-edge technology at its finest: brilliant, resilient and able to take on humanity’s greatest minds. The one question this amazing android cannot solve, however, is the location of its genius inventor, Dr. Vaslovik (Lew Ayres, Donovan’s Brain), and half of the tapes that provide detailed instructions on how his creation can best guide humanity. With a nuclear time bomb counting down in its chest, Questor must rely on the help of another scientist, Dr. Jerry Robinson (Mike Farrell, M*A*S*H), to solve the secret of its origins. Directed by Richard A. Colla (The UFO Incident, Fuzz).

Now while The Questor Tapes may not be on the same level as Star Trek, it is a very interesting, exciting and wonderfully written screenplay. Robert Foxworth is perfect as the android Questor and it is so cool seeing Mike Farrell in a role other than B.J. Hunnicut. The Questor Tapes was a pilot for a TV series that sadly never came to fruition. But this TV film is a lot of fun, no wonder The Questor Tapes was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation.

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This new Blu-ray transfer features a brand new HD Master f
rom a 2K Scan of the 35mm Interpositive.

When watching this film on Blu-ray to say I was impressed would be an understatement. The film looks and sounds amazing. The picture is crisp and clean with no signs of damage and the audio is clear as a bell. But a gorgeous 2K scan transfer is not all that is included on this Blu-ray release. Kino Lorber actually added some nice bonus features to this Blu-ray disc as well! Take a look at what is included.

• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian/Screenwriter Gary Gerani

With a Blu-ray that features a wonderfully restored Gene Roddenbury film, an insightful audio commentary and newly remastered trailer and promo, I consider this one awesome little Blu-ray release.
