In the 1960s there were not much more popular films with the teenage crowd that the beach movies. And the best seemed to be the ones that starred Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. They were always so much fun. These films were not trying to say some major point in human history. They were just trying to have fun.
In 1964 Frankie and Annette were together for a trip to Bikini Beach. It is hard to believe that it is coming on the 60th anniversary of this films initial release. So, for this special occasion MGM is releasing this film on Blu-ray.
There are big waves crashing at Bikini Beach! The beach is close to becoming a retirement village. And a British popstar comes between Dee Dee (Annette Funicello) and Frankie (Frankie Avalon). Will it all be resolved by the end of summer vacation?
These beach movies were always so much fun. Filled with great music. Along with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello they are joined at Bikini Beach by stars like; Martha Hyer, Don Rickles, Harvey Lembeck, John Ashley, Candy Johnson, Jody McCrea, Meredith MacRea, Donna Loren, "Little" Stevie Wonder and Boris Karloff.
Bikini Beach has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
As for bonus features this release has no bonus features. It would have been nice to see an interview with Frankie Avalon he is still alive and well at the age of 83 at the time of this review. Sadly, Annette Funicello died in 2013 after a courage battle with multiple sclerosis.
For the 60th Anniversary of this film's release, I think I think it would have been a great tribute to talk about Annette and when she meant to the beach movies. That was a huge miss for this release, in my humble opinion.
But if you enjoy the simpler times of life and love reliving the beach films. I highly recommend checking out Bikini Beach. The film looks tremendous on Blu-ray even if there are no bonus features. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today.
