Buster Keaton Collection Volume 5: Blu-ray Review

When we think of silent movie comedian the first name that probably comes to most people's minds is Charlie Chaplin. And that is understandable as his look is iconic. But just as iconic and just as funny was Buster Keaton.

In 2015 The Keaton Project was launched. It is a collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna and the Cohen Film Collection. The purpose is to restore all the films of Buster Keaton between 1920- 1928. Kino Lorber have been releasing this restored film in collections for a while now. And now it's time for the next release. This is Volume 5.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Three Ages (1923) A hilariously inventive satire of D.W. Griffith’s INTOLERANCE follows the age-old story of misadventures on the road to finding love, retold in three separate eras, a structure that cleverly allowed Keaton to recut the film into three separate shorts if it failed as a feature. ****

Our Hospitality (1923) A 19th-century New Yorker returns to the antebellum South to claim his inheritance, but finds himself also inheriting a longstanding multi-generational feud between his family and that of the woman he loves (played by Buster’s real-life spouse, Natalie Talmadge). ****

Both of these films were written, directed and starring Buster Keaton. He was literally a genius when it comes to filmmaking. Some of the effects found in these films especially in the stone age of Three Ages are so far ahead of it's time.

There has been so much work that has went into restoring these two films. Collecting different prints, inspecting each scene for the best quality piecing together these two films into the best quality and then restoring them.

When you look at these films now on this Blu-ray release. The films look crisp and clean. It is hard to believe that these film are 100 year old! Think about that these film are a century old and they look as good as they do is almost a miracle. The blacks are deep and dark and the white are bright and vibrant. I am so impressed with the quality of these restorations. Words can not really do these restorations justice.

These films have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in their original full screen format in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio options A DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0.

As a fan of all form of classic cinema whether it is the silent era, 30s, 40s 50s, 60s or 70s cinema. I truly appreciate the work that has gone into making this Blu-ray. The restorations of these films bring these films into the HD era so that a new generation of film fans can discover the genius of Buster Keaton. Simply Amazing!

If you love Buster Keaton, Silent Era cinema or classic cinema as a whole this new Blu-ray collection of Buster Keaton Collection Volume 5 is a must own. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today! You won't be disappointed.
