The Apostle/At Play in the Fields of the Lord: DVD Review

Faith-Based films say something, but more than that they are big business. There is a lot of people and families that enjoy watching films that have the same moral thought process that they have. That is The Passion of the Christ was one of the biggest faith-based film of all time and when Passion of the Christ 2 is coming out soon.

Mill Creek Entertainment have been releasing many faith-based features here lately. The latest is a double feature DVD set that is headlined by the Robert Duvall film entitled The Apostle. Let's take a look at what is included in this 2-disc DVD set.

The Apostle (1997) He was touched by the power and filled with the spirit. A man of faith. A man of the flesh. A man plagued by the darker side of human desire, and rage. In his 1998 Academy Award®️-nominated performance, Robert Duvall is Sonny, a gifted Southern preacher loved by his community. When Sonny loses control and commits a crime of passion, he is forced to run from the law. Hiding out in the small town of Bayou Boutte, Sonny adopts a new identity and sets out on a new mission - to find the road to redemption. ****

At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991) Martin and Hazel Quarrier are small-town fundamentalist missionaries sent to the jungles of South America to convert the Indians. Hazel is terrified of the Indians while Martin is fascinated. Can the interaction of these characters and cultures, and the advancing bulldozers of civilization, avoid disaster? ***

Now admittedly I wanted this set simply for the great Robert Duvall's film The Apostle. I always enjoyed seeing this film. But little did I realize that I would find the film At Play in the Fields of the Lord to be an entertaining film as well.

Now for this DVD release each of these films get their own DVD disc. Many people have complained about stacking movies on one disc. So that will lay all those complaints to rest. I personally never had a problem with 2 or 3 films on a disc.

In this collection you will see such stars as Robert Duvall, Farrah Fawcett, Billy Bob Thornton, June Carter Cash, Miranda Richardson, Tom Berenger, John Lithgow, Daryl Hannah, Aidan Quinn, Tom Waits and Kathy Bates. 

Both films have been transferred to DVD, The Apostle is in widescreen format (1.85:1) and At Play in the fields of the Lord is in full screen format (1.33:1). Both films are presented in Dolby 2.0 and they have the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now there are no bonus features. It would have been nice to see the movie trailers. But to me the most important thing is to have the movie in great quality. Mill Creek Entertainment transferred these films in the best quality possible giving each film its own disc. You can't ask much more than that.
