City of the Living Dead (1980) Blu-ray Review

Lucio Fulci is known as "The Godfather of Gore". He has directed such classics as 1981's The Black Cat, 1979's Zombie, 1981's The House by the Cemetery and 1982's The New York Ripper. In 1980 Fulci produced the first of his "Gates of Hell" trilogy. That film was entitled City of the Living Dead.

Cauldron Films is releasing the Fulci cult classic on UltraHD and Blu-ray combo pack complete with tons of bonus features. Now what makes this release even more special this is the 43 anniversary of the Italian release of this film.

When a priest hangs himself in a cemetery, he opens the gates of hell in the mysterious New England town of Dunwich. At the same moment, Psychic Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl- House By the Cemetery, The Beyond) enters a trance and witnesses the cosmic events unfold, causing her to seemingly die of fright. After being buried alive, she is rescued by skeptical reporter Peter Bell (Christopher George - Pieces, Enter the Ninja, Rat Patrol) who joins her on the journey toward Dunwich to help close the gates of hell before evil is unleashed upon the world! Will they be able to close the gates in time or will the souls of Dunwich be forever stuck in the twilight void?

Lucio Fulci really knows how to build tension in films. He is a master when it comes to that. The acting is so believable. But the true star of this horror film is the special effects/make-up. When Lucio Fulci made a film, you could take it to the bank that you were going to see gore and kills that would stay with you long after the credits roll. They were not cheesy, they were terrifying.

The film has been transferred to UltraHD in
2160p and on Blu-ray in 1080p There are both presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio options DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 for both Italian Language and English. There is also the option for English subtitles. Now one of the really cool features is the seamless branching - watch in English Language w/ English credit sequences and watch Italian language w/ Italian credit sequences.

The film transfer comes from the Arrow Video 4K release from a few years ago. Now if you never got a chance to get your hands on that release, Cauldron Films is giving you another chance. The picture is sharp and clean with no signs of damage. The colors vibrant and the audio is clear with no hiss or pops. This is a tremendous looking transfer.

Now many horror movie fans would have been happy to see this cult classic on UltraHD. But Cauldron Films was not happy with giving physical media fans a bare bones UltraHD/Blu-ray release. They added awesome bonus features to this 3 Disc UltraHD Blu-ray set. Take a look at what is included.
