It is hard to believe that it has been 30 years since the classic TV show Quantum Leap left our television screens with the cliffhanger where Dr. Sam Beckett never returned home. This was such a disheartening ending for such a great series. We all wanted Sam to make it home after 5 years of adventures. But alas it would never happen, or would it?!
NBC Universal in 2022 decided to bring back the amazing adventures in the Quantum Leap accelerator. Many had hoped we would see Scott Bakula, but that was not in the cards. So instead of a true continuation of the original series, we got a round about continuation of the original series.
The series is set 30 years after Dr. Sam Beckett was lost in time. The Quantum Leap program had been abandoned. Until Hubert "Magic" Williams (Ernie Hudson, Ghostbusters), a character in the original series in episode The Leap Home Part 2, assembles a team of brilliant men and women including Dr. Ben Song (Raymond Lee) to restart the program all in hopes to recover Dr. Sam Beckett. But before that can happen Dr. Ben Song leaps and is caught leaping from life to life, just as Dr. Beckett did 30 years ago.
When you are trying on the shoes of such a classic sci-fi show, this can be a daunting task to undertake. It is actually a task I would not ever try, to be honest. As a huge fan of Ernie Hudson it is so cool to see him in this cast. Raymond Lee is no Scott Bakula, but he has his own intriguing way about his taking on the leaping doctor, and it is not a bad one.
Now in a day an age where every TV show episodes tend to play out a huge story arc and you have to watch every single episode or you get lost. Quantum Leap falls more in the line of the original series, although there is a bigger storyline in the background. We won't spoil that here. The episodes like with all series are a bit hit and miss!
Quantum Leap: The Complete First Season has been transferred to Blu-Ray in 1080p in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The Audio is a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. There is also option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
All 18 episodes of season one are spread across 4 discs (5 episodes on disc 1 and 2 and 4 episodes on disc 3 and 4.) Each episode looks and sounds amazing. The colors are bright and vibrant with no signs of Blu-ray artifacts.
Disc One: July 13th, 1985 / Atlantis / Somebody Up There Likes Ben / A Decent Proposal / Salvation or Bust
Disc Two: What a Disaster! / O Ye of Little Faith / Stand by Ben / Fellow Travelers / Paging Dr. Song
Disc Three: Leap. Die. Repeat. / Let Them Play / Family Style / S.O.S.
Disc Four: Ben Song for the Defense / Ben, Interrupted / The Friendly Skies /Judgment Day
I watched the first season on Peacock network and now watching it on Blu-ray, there is no comparison. The episodes look so much better on Blu-ray. That is why I am a supporter of physical media release. I enjoy streaming shows, but when you want the best possible quality for a release you go to the Blu-rays.
So this Blu-ray features 18 episode on 4 Blu-ray discs, but there is no bonus features. That is a shame. I would have loved to see some audio commentaries, deleted scenes interviews, something as bonuses would have made this release a lot better.
Now while this new series can not compare to the original, that does not mean that it doesn't have it's good point and some exciting episodes. I think for fans of science fiction, time travel shows Quantum Leap will be a nice escape. So if you would like a copy for your Blu-ray library head over to Amazon or MovieZyng and order your copy today.
Out of 4 TV Sets (4 being the best) Quantum Leap Season 1 Blu-ray receives....
