Blu-ray Review: Wife Versus Secretary (1936)

In the 1930s Romantic Comedy Dramas were almost a dime a dozen. It seemed as if movie goers just couldn't get enough of these type of films so the studios kept churning them out! So in 1936 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) released a star-studded Romantic comedy drama entitled Wife Versus Secretary.

Now physical media heavyweight Warner Archive, who have been knocking Blu-ray releases out the park as of late, have given Wife Versus Secretary a Blu-ray release a films like this so richly deserves.

Magazine publisher Van Stanhope (Clark Gable) and his wife, Linda (Myrna Loy) have a seemingly happy marriage, but Van's mother (May Robson) doesn't trust his attractive young secretary, Helen "Whitey" Wilson (Jean Harlow). When Whitey helps Van undertake a top-secret plan to purchase a potentially profitable magazine from under the nose of a rival publisher, causing the pair to work long hours alone together, Linda's sudden jealousy almost scuttles both the deal and their marriage.

Now Wife Versus Secretary is a bolstered by the amazing cast that now only feature Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Jean Harlow, but a great supporting cast that included George Barbier (The Man Who Came to Dinner), Hobart Cavanaugh (I cover the Waterfront) and James Stewart (It's a wonderful life, Rear Window). In addition to great actors, the story is good, but by no means is this going to be the best classic romcom you are going to see. But it still is a charming and engaging film that will keep you engaged right to the end.

Wife vs. Secretary is presented in 1080p in it's original aspect ratio of 1.37:1. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. This transfer is sourced from a 4K scan. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This 4K scan brings new life to this classic film. The depth of the black and white are tremendous in this picture. There is no signs of damage to this print as we go through the film.
We hear often in glorious black and white, well this print is glorious! But a gorgeous transfer is not all that this Blu-ray has going for it! Warner Archive added some cool bonuses to this Blu-ray as well!

* The Public Pays
A near 20 minute short from the films series "Crime Does Not Pay" series. This short dramatizes the protection racket forced upon a milk distributor and the police response.

* Theatrical Trailer

I really enjoy seeing the films looking better than ever. And the shorts and the trailer as a bonus feature, c'est magnifique! The only thing that could have made this better would be the inclusion of a classic cartoon.

So often people think of Clark Gable and they think Gone with the Wind, and understandably so! But it is so cool to see Clark Gable "The King of Hollywood", let his hair down and have fun in this romcom.

If you love 1930s romcoms Wife Versus Secretary is one that you will really enjoy, and seeing it in HD is the perfect way to witness it! I highly recommend this Blu-ray for your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
