Bruce Willis is Hudson Hawk: Vintage Video DVD Review

Bruce Willis Hudson Hawk DVD cover
Bruce Willis had one amazing career. Over 4 decades. He first gained stardom with his role in the show Moonlighting beside Cybill Shepherd. He would than go on to be in such amazing films as Die Hard, Sixth Sense, The Fifth Element, Red, Sin City, Armageddon, Unbreakable, Pulp Fiction and many more.

Sadly it was announced that Bruce Willis would have to retire due to his diagnosis of aphasia. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him. But the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are giving us a chance to own a Vintage Video release of one of Bruce Willis' films 1991's Hudson Hawk.

Eddie “the Hawk” Hawkins (Bruce Willis), the world’s most famous cat burglar, who, after 10 years in prison, is ready to go straight. But it’s not going to easy for the Hawk. The mob and the C.I.A. have conspired to blackmail Eddie and his partner into stealing three da Vinci masterpieces from the most heavily-guarded museums in the world. Sounds simple, right? WRONG! While trying to steal the goods, Hawk falls in love with a beautiful but schizophrenic nun and is relentlessly pursued by the greedy and powerful Minerva and Darwin Mayflower, who want the masterpieces as part of their twisted plot to ruin the world’s economy. It’s wall-to-wall action as the wise-cracking Hawk attempts to save the world, win the girl and have the last laugh

Hudson Hawk is an ambitious film that has so many good ideas, but with so many good ideas all thrown into the mix the film seems to become muddy. That may be the reason that it was such a huge Box office flop.

Hudson Hawk over the years though has gain a kind of cult following. Fans of Bruce Willis will love his humor, the action and adventure in this film. Michael Lehmann does a good job balancing the the action and the humor, though in my opinion it still fails to be a good film. It also should be noted that this film is rated R for excessive profanity and violence. So this film is by no means for the whole family.

Mill Creek Entertainment has transferred this film to DVD in anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio the audio is Dolby digital 2.0 audio and finally there is a option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The transfer looks really nice for a film that is 31 years old. There is no signs of damage to this print whatsoever.

Now for bonus features. There is just the English subtitles, and the VHS Style slipcover (seen above) that looks just like something you would have seen at Blockbuster or the Mom and Pops Video rentals back in the day.

I have seen a lot of discussions online about people that can not stand these VHS style covers. Me I love them I think they are so awesome, but some people hate them. Well, Mill Creek Entertainment has made the VHS feature a slipcover on the actual DVD insert there is artwork that is void of that. So Mill Creek Entertainment had everyone covered. If you don't like the slipcover, you can get rid of it.

While Hudson Hawk is far from Bruce Willis' best film, in honor of his career this Vintage Video DVD of Hudson Hawk would make a great addition to one's collection. Head over to Amazon or Deep Discount and order your copy of Hudson Hawk.
