Adventures of Don Juan (1948) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Errol Flynn was the famed actor of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Errol was best known for his romantic swashbuckler roles. His heroic roles in such classics as The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) and Captain Blood (1935) would put him in the hearts of film fans for generations.

In 1948 he would take the lead role of the iconic Don Juan in 'Adventures of Don Juan'. Now the good folks at Warner Archive have given this adventure classic a deluxe Blu-ray release a Errol Flynn film so richly deserves.

The Spanish Nobleman Don Juan de Maraña (Errol Flynn) has a reputation of being a ladies man, but there is one woman who has truly captured his heart, Queen Margaret (Viveca Lindfors), who is unhappily married to King Philip III (Romney Brent). When Don Juan discovers a plot to dethrone the royal family, he rallies his trusted friends to defend both his country and his beloved queen.

Warner Archive has transferred this 1940s classic to Blu-ray in 1080p in it's original full screen format in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio. Finally there is an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This film transfer has been mastered from a 4K scan of the Original Nitrate Technicolor negatives. Now I must say that this is truly one of the most impressive masters from Warner Archive. The colors are vibrant, the picture is crisp and the audio is clear. Don Juan has never looked better than it does on this Blu-ray release. But a gorgeous transfer is not it, Warner Archive added some very cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included on this disc.
