Red Skelton The Farewell Specials {DVD Review}

Reviewed By Jason S. Lockard

America's Clown was Red Skelton. I grew up on the comedy if this legend. He was known for his pantomime, routines and zany character such as the loveable tramp Freddy the Freeloader, Cauliflower McPugg, Clem Kadiddlehopper.

He was an interesting man. He said comedy was like medicine and when you use profanity you poison the medicine.

The good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment released, Red Skelton The Farewell Specials are a collection of four TV specials a few years ago. What an amazing set it it!  Let's take a brief look at what is included.

Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Red Skelton's Christmas Dinner: Freddie the Freeloader (Red) and his good friend The Professor (Vincent Price) sets out to have Xmas dinner in a very expensive New York restaurant. Along the way Freddie meets memorable characters such as Molly the bag lady (Imogene Coca) a drunken Santa (Jack Duffy) and he even stops by a hospital to entertain the children. This is one of my favorite Christmas specials and is worth the price alone. ****

More Funny Faces: This is a comedy concert special recorded for HBO, Skelton is joined by world-renowned mime artist Marcel Marceau in recreating some of Red’s funniest routines and exciting new skits. ***

Funny Faces III: Another HBO special Packed with laughter and memorable characters, this special features Red in more hilarious sketches and pantomime. ***

A Royal Command Performance: Red Skelton America’s court jester finds himself in jolly old England to perform for Britain’s royal family at London’s Royal Albert Hall. ***

These shows are presented in their original full screen format in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. You
 might think squeezing four specials on one disc  that the episodes would suffer, but these specials show little to no signs of pixelation.

This collection is well worth the price. Red Skelton is a comedy icon and you can sit down with grandma and grandpa and the kids and just have a good laugh! This is very rare to find a collection of comedy the whole family can enjoy!
