Arrow Video Blu-ray Review: Lovers Lane (1999)

Slasher films are a genre of horror films featuring a killer stalking and murdering a group of people. Some of the best slasher films in history include, Halloween, Friday the 13th, A nightmare on Elm street, and my own personal favorite the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Even though the above mentioned films are from the 1970s and 1980s, slasher films are still popular even to this day. Many have even gain cult status over they years. One such film is 1999's Lovers Lane. Now the good folks at Arrow Video are giving this film a chance to get a deluxe Blu-ray release.

A steamy secret tryst that was brutally cut short on Valentine’s Day an unlucky thirteen years ago comes back to haunt the teens who linger around the lovers lane where the double slaying took place. The County Sheriff Tom Anderson (Matt Riedy) has just about come to terms with the fact that it was his wife who died in another man’s car on that fateful night. His daughter Mandy (Erin J. Dean), who as a four-year-old saw her mother’s corpse carried away from the scene, has a different take on things. It doesn’t help that her classmate Michael (Riley Smith) lost his father to the same hook-handed homicidal maniac in that night’s incident. To cap it all off, as another Valentine’s Day comes round, reports come through that the man arrested as “The Hook” has just bust out of his asylum.

Probably we all remember telling or hearing a version of the urban legend of "the hook". Sitting around the camp fire telling ghost stories. Ah memories! This urban legend provides the storyline for this slasher film.

Lovers Lane provides the typical violent scares and screams slasher film fans know and love. There is a good amount of blood and gore. There is a pretty good amount of profanity and sexual content. But if you love slashers like Friday the 13th, well then you know what you are in for. Lover's Lane provides the slasher goods, but the story while has a nice twist, is a bit thin, in my humble opinion.

Arrow Video have transferred both the the widescreen 1.85:1 version and the full-frame 1.33:1 version of the film to Blu-ray in 1080p from a brand new 2K restoration from a 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative. The soundtrack is the original lossless stereo audio on both versions. Finally there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

This new 2k restoration is really nice. There is great colors and nice film grain! There is no real signs of damage to this print. The restoration really makes this Blu-ray a must own, but Arrow Video as always added some cool bonus features to this release. Take a look at what is included.

* Brand new audio commentary with writer-producers Geof Miller and Rory Veal

* Screaming Teens: The Legacy of Lovers Lane featurette with Geof Miller and Rory Veal and actors Matt Riedy and Carter Roy
