Clifford (1991) {Blu-ray Review}

Martin Short and Charles Grodin in Clifford on Blu-ray
Martin Short is a comedy legend whether you remember his classic characters on Saturday Night Live, his off the wall film critic Jiminy Glick or his multiple movies. No doubt everyone has seen Martin Short. And to see him perform is to enjoy him.

Well, in 1991 Martin Short took his "short" stature and big comedy to the silver screen for one of his craziest roles ever as a young boy named Clifford. Now Scorpion Releasing, MGM and Ronin Films have joined forces to bring this cult comedy classic to Blu-ray, and I couldn't be happier.

The film follows 10 year old Clifford (Martin Short) who is obsessed with visiting a dinosaur-themed amusement park. On his way to Honolulu with his parents he causes the airplane to land in LA. He has the plan to stay with his uptight uncle Martin (Charles Grodin), who just happens to be trying to prove to his girlfriend that he loves children. This is perfect, except Martin find himself always putting his job over his word to Clifford and Clifford is an evil child to say the least.

I find it so interesting that this story is told by Father Clifford to a young troublemaker played by Ben Savage. Ben is the younger brother of Fred Savage who was also told a story in the classic movie The Princess Bride.

Clifford is a movie that is a bit off the wall, but that is what gives this film it's charm. Martin Short is committed to his performance, as he is with all of his roles. He never ceases to go all out in everything he does. Than there is Charles Grodin (Midnight Run, Beethoven) and Mary Steenburgen (Book Club, Back to the Future III) they also put the chips all in for this film. So they're commitment to the film makes this films so much better.

Clifford Blu-ray Still

Clifford arrives on Blu-ray thanks to Scorpion Releasing and Ronin Flix. The film has been transferred in 1080p and is in 1.85:1 aspect ratio and the soundtrack is a lossless DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer is really nice. The film colors are vibrant, the picture is crisp and the audio is clear. There is no signs of damage to this print.

Now for bonus features there are bonus trailers: Clifford, The Heavenly Kid, California Dreaming, Fraternity Vacation and Record City and Grunt: The Wrestling Movie. In addition to the trailers there is the Blu-ray insert. A reversible insert with different artwork. This is a tremendous bonus feature for a fans of movie posters like me.
