The Illusionist (2006)

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

MVD Marquee Collection have been releasing some amazing titles on Blu-ray. This giving film fans a chance to build an amazing library! The next film released on the label is 2006's The Illusionist.

The film follows the acclaimed illusionist Eisenheim (Edward Norton). He has not only captured the imaginations of all of Vienna, but also the interest of the ambitious Crown Prince Leopold. When Leopold's new fiancée Sophie (Jessica Biel) rekindles a childhood fascination with Eisenheim, the Prince's interest evolves into obsession...and suddenly the city's Chief Inspector (Paul Giamatti) finds himself investigating a shocking crime. But even as the Inspector engages him in a dramatic challenge of wills, Eisenheim prepares for his most impressive illusion yet.

The p
erformances of Norton, Giamatti and Beil are stellar and the supporting cast is terrific as well. The screenplay was adapted from the novel Eisenheim the Illusionist by Neil Burger and he directed the film as well. A masterful job on both accounts.

The film was shot in the Czech Republic and has a real old world feel! The film takes you on a journey of magic and mystery and you never know quite what to believe. I truly enjoyed the ride the film took me on.

As for objectionable material there is little to no profanity. In face I can't remember any so there can't be anything to bad. There is a intimate scene between Eisenhein and Sophie but no nudity it shown. There is also a suicidal violence.

This MVD Marq
uee
blu-ray release the film has transferred from the original film element presented in High Definition widescreen format and 1.78:1 aspect ratio. As for the audio there is English 5.1 Dolby Surround and 2.0 and in French 5.1 Dolby Surround. And finally English, and Spanish Subtitles.

The film's transfer looks and sounds stunning. The gold and reds in the stage performances beautifully brilliant and in outdoor scenes in the forest are vibrant and the streets are dark and gritty, but not grainy.

Now MVD Marquee is not satisfied with a stand alone movie release, absolutely not! So they loaded a good amount of bonus features on this release. Let's take a look at what is included.
