Double Impact (1991) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In the 80's and 90's 'the Muscles from Brussels' Jean-Claude Van Damme was one of the most bankable actors. When his name was on the marquee people were in the seats. Not that his movies were going to change the world with a message, no. There were just films to escape the care of life and enjoy some 'kicks'.

MVD Visual have been releasing a special Retro VHS blu-ray versions of some of these older films, through their Rewind Collection. Now it is time for Van Damme's Double Impact to get it's turn to shine. Let's take a look at what is included in this blu-ray release.

Nearly 25 years after seeing his father killed by Hong Kong crime boss Raymond Zhang (Philip Chan Yan Kin), Chad Wagner (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is living in Los Angeles as a flourishing yet peaceful martial arts trainer. But when Alex, Chad's twin brother visits his brother with a plan to avenge their father's death. As the pair plan their payback against Zhang, they also struggle to overcome their personal differences.

This was the first of 4 movies and 1 TV shows in which Van Damme played multiple roles. The films were Timecop, Maximum Risk and Replicant. The TV show Jean-Claude Van Johnson. This one is Double Impact is the best of those.

While this film may not be
Van Damme's best film ever. It is up for debate what is his best film! This is a great little action thriller, that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The film has been transferred in HD
1.85:1 aspect ratio and audio in 2.0 English Stereo Sound, Spanish Dolby digital 2.0. There is also subtitles in English, Spanish and French. The film looks pretty good. There is a bit of grain shown in the picture when the darker scenes come up. But this transfer looks probably the best I've seen.

As for special bonus features, this disc is loaded. Check out the special features added in this HD release.

  • The making of Double Impact Part 1 and 2
