Benji (1974) {Blu-ray Review}

When you think of canine actors to many Benji is second only to probably Lassie. There have been quite a few Benji movies over the years. Now in 2018 a reboot of one of the most popular canine movie series is coming out! Well, to get us prepared for the new Benji movie! Mill Creek Entertainment is releasing the first Benji movie on Blu-ray and DVD combo pack!

The 1974 film follows the story of a stray dog (Benji) doesn't need an owner, preferring to roam freely all over his friendly Texas town. He delights in tormenting the cat of a local widow (Frances Bavier, aunt Bee on Andy Griffith Show), and can always rely on a kindly shopkeeper (Edgar Buchanan) for a handout. But, life for Benji changes when the children he loves are kidnapped and held for ransom, the little dog springs into action, taking it upon himself to foil the crooks and save the day.

This is a beautiful little film for all ages and it still holds up today! In 1975 Benji was nominated for Best Music, Original Song for Benji's Theme (I feel love) and won a Golden Globe for the song. Than in 2006 Benji was nominated for AFI's 100 Years...100 Cheers.


The film has been transferred and restored from the a 35mm film print. The Blu-ray is in 1080p High Definition (1.85:1) and Uncompressed 2.0 Stereo. The movie has been beautifully restored!
The colors are vibrant and audio is crisp! The widescreen version of this film is a huge upgrade over the previous releases on DVD were you get a cropped version.

The bonus features in this collection includes; an audio commentary featuring Joe and Brandon Camp, original Theatrical Trailer, Half-hour TV featurettes, The Phenomenon of Benji and Benji at Work as well as photo galleries. 

This is a great little Blu-ray release loaded with bonus features. The film is not for everyone! horror movie fans are not going to want to see this. But for dog lovers or families that want a great films for the entire family to enjoy, this is perfect!
