I would venture to say that anyone reading this has probably never heard of 1992's Red Flag Down. Simply because this film is a no budget Shot on Video regional horror film. It's hard to imagine but this film will soon be 35 years old. So, it is about time for a home video disc release.Well, enter MVD Visual. They have partnered with Blood Sick and Lunchmeat to release this cult film on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
Synopsis: When the eccentric owners of a state-of-the-art paintball park invite a young city reporter to preview their genius, things get out of hand when one team realizes they've been tricked into using real bullets, and killing their opponents. Those who were forced to kill their own friends confront the crazed owners only to find they're trapped in the game - and the only way out is through the barrel of a gun! Revenge runs wild in a bloody kill-or-be-killed exchange of death where the final twist is the most shocking plot yet!
The minimum run time for a feature film is 40 minutes, Red Flag Down runs under 60 minutes and I have to be honest that seems a bit long as well. The film has a good plotline, but the execution is lacking. The film feels like it is just endless amounts of just running through the woods.
Practical effects are the best in film to me. And they use plenty of blood squibs. This is an effect where blood squirts after a violent attack. Producers used quite a few of these. But when seen on film it is always in slow motion. After a while that gets a bit old.
As I said the plotline is good, the effects are good, the execution could have been better. But the best part is the twist at the end. I loved Rod Serling's Twilight Zone and these twist endings were always so cool. So, seeing one here is nice.
The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in the original full screen format. The audio track is an English 2.0 Stereo track. The film quality of this Blu-ray is not spectacular, but it is not bad when you think this is a 35 year old, no budget shot on video regional film. I am surprised it looks as good as it does. In all honesty this film is for a very niche audience. This is for fans of the no budgets 90s SOV horror films/ For the casual movie fan this is going to be a disappointment. But fans that love this kind of film will defiantly get a kick out of it.
