In the 1960s no show took audiences on a ride to other worlds like that of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek. While it only lasted 3 seasons, its impact was immense. The first two season of Star Trek feature great episodes with unforgettable characters and tremendous writing. Season 3 seemed like a bit of a downgrade. The episodes were not quite as crisp as the previous 2 seasons, but season 3 of Star Trek is still tremendously better than a season of most shows.
All 79 episodes have been transferred across 20 Blu-ray discs in 1080p and are presented in their original full-screen format. There are two English audio options to choose from: a new 7.1 surround sound and the original 2.0 mono track. There are also Spanish and French tracks in Dolby Digital 2.0. Finally, there are subtitles in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
These new Blu-ray look absolutely stunning. The episodes are crisp and clean and the colors are bright and vibrant. I love that Sony included both versions of these episodes on these Blu-ray discs. The original broadcast version and the ones with the new enhanced digital effects. The best of both worlds.
Now, as for bonus features. There are over 9 hours of bonus features. But these are all previously released bonus features. There is no new bonus content. I have to say that is a major disappointment. For a 60th anniversary edition. There should have been some new content.
With the packaging, we have seen a trend in physical media collecting the whole series in a massive box with stacked discs. I have been seeing for quite a while, most recently with the 75th Anniversary set of I Love Lucy. While stacked discs are not my favorite, there is no denying that this is a space saver for collectors with huge collections. So that is a nice bonus.
Even with all the lack of new bonus features and the stacked discs, I consider this a great Blu-ray set. I am so glad to be able to upgrade my Star Trek DVDs to Blu-ray and save some space.
