On November 15, 1958, Tyrone Power suddenly died of a heart attack; he was only 44. But in his short career, he left behind a catalogue of performances like few have achieved. One of his final performances caught on film was 1957's Abandon Ship. Now Sony Home Entertainment is releasing this film on 4K for the first time ever.
Synopsis: Gripping sea adventure in which survivors from a sunken luxury liner crowd into a small boat commanded by Power, whose initial aim is to save all. Many of those crammed into the boat or clinging to it in the water are sick or dying. It soon becomes apparent to the mortally injured Nolan, one of the ship's officers, that Power must exercise a survival-of-the-fittest rule.
Tyrone Power gives another wonderful performance in the dramatic film. This film is about survivors on a lifeboat. So you would probably think this is a rehash of Alfred Hitchcock's classic film. Well, you would be wrong. There is so much peril while each of these passengers fights to survive; you really have no clue what is going to happen. This makes for an entertaining drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Sony Home Entertainment has transferred this film to 4K in 2160p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track was an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The black-and-white image is crisp and clean with no damage to the print I witnessed while screening this film.
This 4K release includes the U.S. version of the film entitled Abandon Ship! and the International Version under the title Seven Waves Away. The international cut is about 2 minutes longer, with a slightly different ending. I won't spoil that. There is also a tremendous audio commentary by Jason A. Ney that brings to life the maritime disasters that were the inspiration for this feature film.
Finally, Sony has included a digital copy of this film. This is a nice bonus, as you can have the movie anywhere you go that you have an internet connection. Of course, there is nothing like the physical copy, but to have a film in your digital locker when you're away from your collection is always a wonderful option.
Abandon Ship is a great drama and the 4K transfer gives this film new life. The only downside I can point to is I wishe there were a bit more bonus features. If you would like to add this 4K to your home video library, you can do so by heading over to MovieZyng or Amazon today.
