The Ugly Blu-ray Review (Unearthed Films) | Brutal Cult Horror Gets New Life

There has been a surge of horror films that are based on kids stories and characters. We've seen horror films of Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Popeye the Sailor, The Grinch and so many more.

Long before this trend, in 1997, Scott Reynolds wrote and directed a horror film, "The Ugly" whose idea comes from the classic fairy tale The Ugly Duckling. Unearthed Films is releasing The Ugly on deluxe Blu-ray.

Synopsis: Confined to a mental institution, disturbed young serial killer Simon (The Rule of Jenny Pen's Paolo Rotondo) is tormented by cruel orderlies and his own personal demons including 'The Ugly' which compels him to kill. Now at his request, Dr. Karen Schumaker (The Brokenwood Mysteries' Rebecca Hobbs) arrives to discover whether Simon is fit to be released back into society. As the terrifying secrets within Simon's mind are revealed, no one will be left unscathed by the horrors about to be unleashed.

Scott Reynolds wrote and directed a haunting tale for his debut as a director. The Ugly is maybe not the best storyline you will ever see, but there is no denying that the make-up effects are absolutely out of this world. Especially when you think this film was produced in the 1990s.

Uneaerthed Films has transferred The Ugly to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.77:1 aspect ratio. The audio options are English 2.0 LPCM and English 4.0 DTS-HD Master Audio. There is also the option for English SDH and English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I have been reviewing Unearthed Films releases for a while now. And one thing is for sure you can guarantee the best possible quality. And this Blu-ray release is no different. This transfer is taken from a new
4K scan from the 35mm interpositive, resulting in a very nice picture quality. Also, Unearthed Film always puts a nice amount of bonus features on their Blu-ray discs. Take a look at what is included.

Bonus Materials

* NEW Commentary with actors Paolo Rotondo and Rebecca Hobbs, moderated by Nathaniel Thompson

Unearthed Films dug deep into the archives and rescued two short films from Scott Reyniolds. Watching these films, that are raw and a bit rough around the edges, but you can see a promising future. These are nice bonuses on this Blu-ray.
