Private Benjamin Blu-ray Review | Goldie Hawn Comedy Classic Gets the HD Treatment

Golden Hawn burst on the scene with her "airhead" persona on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. She became a favorite of TV fans. She would take that ditzy character to the big screen in screwball comedies. But over the years, she would break out of that ditzy blonde character and prove her ability to be a versatile actress.

In 1980, Goldie Hawn would have one of her biggest successes with the film Private Benjamin. That film would be one of the biggest box office hits of 1980. And it would score the rank No. 82 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years...100 Laughs list.

Warner Archive Collection has been restoring not only Golden Age and Silver Age cinema. But they have been selecting great later era cinema as well to restore. Now the latest Blu-ray release is Private Benjamin.

Synopsis: A Jewish-American princess, Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn), is devastated when her husband (Albert Brooks) drops dead on their wedding night. While she grieves, a duplicitous recruiter for the Women's Army Corps convinces her to enlist. Judy thinks her enlistment is like a vacation but Captain Lewis (Eileen Brennan) quickly dashes her hopes of an easy time. As Judy goes through basic training like any other grunt, she becomes a good soldier and develops a sense of self-esteem.

This is a fun little film, but even more than that, it is a film about female empowerment. A woman doesn't need to be married and have kids to be important. Golden Hawn shines as Private Benjamin. The cast surrounding her is amazing. The script is well-written and the film is fast-paced resulting in a wonderful cinematic experience.

Warner Archive has restored and transferred Private Benjamin to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in the original aspect ratio of 2.39:1. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This new restoration scan of Private Benjamin brings new life to this 80s comedy classic. The picture is sharp as a tack and the colors are vibrant. There is not one sign of damage to this print that I witnessed while screening this film. To say I was impressed with this transfer would be a huge understatement.

Now in addition to a simply mind-blowing transfer. Warner Archive Collection added some nice bonus features to this Blu-ray disc. Take a look at what they included on this disc.

* Two episodes of the Private Benjamin TV series
 - Benjamin to the Rescue (Season 1 Episode 1)
 - Captain's Helper (Season 1 Episode 4)
* Theatrical Trailer

I love that Warner Archive added a couple of episodes of the TV series to this disc. But in all honesty, Season one was so short that they could have put all four Season 1 episodes on this disc and made it the feature movie and first-season set.

All in all Private Benjamin on Blu-ray would make a great addition to anyone's home video library. If you would like a copy of this Blu-ray you can order it by heading over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy today.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray of Private Benjamin receives.....
