Billy Crystal first appeared on our TV screens as Jodie Dallas in the hilarious spoof sitcom Soap. Not long after that he would join the cast of Saturday Night Live. After his time on SNL he would transition to the silver screen.
His films include such favorites as Throw Mama from the Train, When Harry Met Sally, City Slickers, and Mr. Saturday Night. Now, MGM is releasing Mr. Saturday Night on Blu-ray.
Synopsis: Given his success in the early days of television, you'd think that Buddy Young Jr. (Billy Crystal) would be coasting happily into retirement alongside his wife, Elaine (Julie Warner). Instead, Buddy is an acerbic blowhard who alienates his brother, Stan (David Paymer), and everyone else who fails to bow to his bullying. His agent, Mr. Saturday Night Wells (Helen Hunt), has positioned elderly Buddy for a big movie role, but his irreverence might come back to bite him one last time.
Billy Crystal not only stars in this film but he co-wrote the script and directed the film. While this is listed as a comedy, this is at its heart a gut-wrenching drama about a man who makes the world hate him.
Billy Crystal is great as a crabby old comedian, beaten down by show business. The rest of the cast is very good as well. And there is great cameos by comedians Jerry Lewis, Carl Ballantine, Slappy White, and Jackie Gayle appear in the New York Friars' Club scene.
MGM has transferred Mr. Saturday Night to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This Blu-ray transfer looks and sounds really good. The picture is crisp and clean. I didn't see any signs of damage to this print while screening this film,. But unlike previous MGM Blu-ray releases MGM added some great bonus features to this disc as well.
Bonus Features:
* Mr. Saturday Night Commentary Track
* Trailer
* Deleted Scenes
* Gag Reel
* The Buddy Young Story
* See What We Did!
* Make-Up!
* Mr. Saturday Night - Behind The Scenes Stills
With a great audio commentary, 3 featurettes, deleted scenes and my favorite the gag reels, MGM really went above and beyond to make this release something special.
If you love the films of Billy Crystal as much as I do well, your collection is not complete without Mr. Saturday Night. And the perfect way to have it in your library is with this Blu-ray. Head over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy today.
