Spaceballs: The Animated Series DVD Review – MVD Rewind Collection Brings Mel Brooks’ Sci-Fi Spoof to Physical Media

Mel Brooks' mind for spoof comedy is unparalleled. For Mel Brooks, no genre was off limits. He spoofed westerns, historical epics, Alfred Hitchcock, adventure, horror, and even sci-fi with one of my favorites of his spoof movies, Spaceballs.

After years and years of speculation and hope from fans, Spaceballs 2 is finally coming in 2027. But that is still a long way off. Well, MVD Rewind Collection has given Spaceballs fans a reason to rejoice with the DVD release of Spaceballs: The Complete Animated Series.

Synopsis: From a galaxy not so far away come these hilarious animated adventures based on Mel Brooks’ 1987 comedy ‘Spaceballs’ - the greatest sci-fi spoof of all time! Join Yogurt, President Skroob, Lone Starr, Barf, Princess Vespa, and the dastardly, dorky Dark Helmet for a blast of interstellar insanity! Directed and voiced by comic genius Mel Brooks and featuring voices from the film's original stars Daphna Zuniga and Joan Rivers, SPACEBALLS: THE ANIMATED SERIES pokes fun at everything under the sun, from pop culture and politics to megahit movies and more!

Like with all Mel Brooks spoof this series parodies many different forms of entertainment, including the Star Wars universe, The Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Grand Theft Auto video games, and so much more.

Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga and Joan Rivers returned to the roles they made famous in the original movie. Whereas others had to be recast Tino Insana took on the role of Barf, replacing John Candy as he tragically passed away. Rino Romano replaced Bill Pullman as Lone Starr. Dee Bradley Baker replaced Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet.

The animation is a bit primative and the stories and comedy are a bit hit and miss for the most part. But foithat its was I enjoyed watching this series. It is by no means the quality of the original movie, but I never expected it to be, so I wasn't too disappointed.

MVD Rewind Collection has transferred these episodes to 2 DVD discs and is presented in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

DISC 1: Pilot (Part 1) - “Dark Helmet's Revenge” / Pilot (Part 2) - “The Schwartz Strikes Back" / Episode 01 – “Revenge of the Sithee” / Episode 02 – “Grand Theft Starship” / Episode 03 – “Lord of the Onion Rings” / Episode 04 – “Watch Your Assic Park” / Episode 05 – “Outbreak” / Episode 06 – “Hairy Putter and the Gopher of Fire”

DISC 2: Episode 07 – “The Mighty Meteor” / Episode 08 – “Spaceballs of the Caribbean” / Episode 09 – “Fishfinger” / Episode 10 – “The Skroobinator” / Episode 11 – “Deep Ship” / Episode 12 – “Druidian Idol” / Episode 13 – “Spidermawg”

The primitive animation DVD transfer is really nice. The picture quality is sharp with no signs of digital artifacts, and the audio is clean with no audio anomalies. In addition to all 15 episodes collected here. There are some special features included as well!

Special Features:
• Spaceballs (1987) Theatrical Trailer
• Spaceballs 2 (2027) Teaser Trailer
• Collectible Mini-Poster
• Limited Edition Slipcover (First Pressing Only)

As you can see, there is both the original trailer and the 2027 teaser trailer. As with all Rewind Collection releases, I love the mini-posters. These are suitable for framing, which I have done with quite a few of these so far.
Finally, the inside of the sleeve MVD has printed a complete episode guide.

This is a DVD release that happens to be housed in a Blu-ray case. if you are looking at this release at first glance, you would think you are purchasing
a Blu-ray, but this is a DVD. Now, to be honest this is not a huge problem, plus the animation probably wouldn't benefit much from a Blu-rayoverease from a DVD.

This is probably unpopular, but I found this animated series kind of entertaining. Okay, granted the animation is nowrite to right home aboureplacementlaceent voices are okay, but you they'reell there not the original voices. And the stories are a bit raunchy even by Mel Brooks. standards

If you are a completist, then me. Than Spaceballs The Animated Series will look great alongside the movie release in your home video library. So if you would like to add this to your collection, llection head ov
er to MVD Shop or Amazon and order your copy today.
