Woody Woodpecker and Friends: The Golden Age Collection Blu-ray Review – A Must-Have for Cartoon Collectors

What comes to mind when I say classic cartoons? Most would probably say Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry. But just as classic and just as iconic as these would be the little bird with the big personality. Of course I am talking about Woody Woodpecker.

Woody Woodpecker was so much fun to watch as a kid. And who as a kid didn't try the icon laugh? Universal Home Entertainment have now restored 25 classic cartoons and released them on Blu-ray on a set entitled, Woody Woodpecker and Friends: Golden Age Collection.

Synopsis: Woody Woodpecker, everyone's favorite wacky red-headed bird, returns in with more hilarious and crazy adventures in The Woody Woodpecker and Friends Golden Age Collection! Join Woody and his friends in hours of side-splitting fun with these 25 classic theatrical cartoons from renowned cartoonist Walter Lantz.

The 25 cartoons found on this disc are as follows:
Woodpecker in the Rough / Get Lost Little Doggy / Greedy Gabby Gator / Heap Big Hepcat / Romp in the Swamp / Rough Riding Hood / Science Friction / Billion Dollar Boner / Andy Panda goes Fishing / Good-bye Mr. Moth / The Bongo Punch / Little Televillian / Fractured Friendship / Paw's Night Out / Pig in a Pickle / Pigeon Holed / The Talking Dog / Witty Kitty / Adventures of Tom Thumb Jr. / The Sleeping Princess / Kitten's Mittens / Syncopated Sioux / The Flying Turtle / The Mouse and the Lion / Flea for Two

Many in this generation have probably been discovering Woody Woodpecker because it is being aired on MeTV. But this Blu-ray set has 25 cartoons including two not airing on MeTV because they are deemed offensive because of racist stereotypes. Whether you deem them offensive or not one thing is for sure these 25 cartoons are entertaining.

All 25 cartoons have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and are presented in the 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-Digital Surround Sound 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

These cartoons have been restored, and they look and sound simply spectacular. I don't remember them looking this good when I watched them as a kid. The picture quality is crisp and clean there is no scratches or debris that I witnessed. There is no digital artifacts or audio anomalies. These cartoons are a pleasure to watch on Blu-ray.

For this Blu-ray Universal did something that I think is what makes physical media always better than streaming they added some bonus features. Something you can't get on a streaming service. Take a look at what is included.

* Cartoonland Mysteries
* Spook-a-Nanny
* Drawing Woody and Andy
* Directing Animated Cartoons
* Timing a Cartoon
* Character Movement
* The Animators Job
* Using Backgrounds
* Drawing with Walter Lantz
* Storyboarding Woody Woodpecker

So not only do you get 25 hilarious cartoons, but addition short subjects and featurettes. That is almost 3 hours of entertainment on one Blu-ray disc. That is a lot of bang for your buck. Defiantly a good addition to an animation wing of a home video library.
