After the rousing success of the Blake Edwards' film The Pink Panther starring Peter Sellers and David Niven, it was time for a sequel. Blake Edwards recruited his bumbling Inspector to return for another off the wall adventure. This time it would be entitled A Shot in the Dark.
A Shot in the Dark is now over 60 years old. It is a comedy classic and has received a new 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative. Kino Lorber have taken this 4k Scan and released this film on Blu-ray with bonus features.
Synopsis: Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) is accidentally assigned to a high-profile murder case at a wealthy estate, the fuddled French detective immediately falls head over heels — when not falling out of windows and into ponds! — for the prime suspect, beautiful parlor maid Maria Gambrelli (Elke Sommer). There’s no lengths Clouseau won’t go to in championing Maria as innocent, from disobeying his ferociously furious boss Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) to disrobing at a nudist colony. But when more and more murders occur, will the Inspector himself stay alive long enough to solve the baffling case?
In very rare occasions a movie sequel better than the original film. But I truly believe that A Shot in the Dark is a superior film to The Pink Panther. I think the reason for that is because Peter Sellers is given the reigns to this production and is allowed to be his hilarious self for the whole hour and 40 minutes of this film.
Let's be honest here. Peter Sellers can't do this on his own. There has to be a good story, which there is. And he needs a good case around him, which he has. From Herbert Lom, Elke Somer, George Sanders, Tracy Reed, Graham Stark, Andre Maranne, and Burt Kwouk.
Kino Lorber has transferred A Shot in the Dark to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio tracks are an English 5.1 Surround and an English Lossless 2.0 Audio. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Now this brand New HD Master is taken from a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative. Watching this film in HD from this new 4k Scan is a pleasure to say the least. The picture is crisp and clean. The colors literally pop off the screen. To say I was impressed by the quality of this new release would be an understatement.
In addition to a absolutely gorgeous looking picture quality. Kino Lorber added some great bonus features to this disc. Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray.
* Audio commentary by Jason Simos of The Peter Sellers Appreciation Society
* Back to the Start - Origin of The Pink Panther with Walter Mirisch: Featurette
* Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews on The Dick Cavett Show
* Five Theatrical Trailers
The wonderful audio commentary and featurette are spectacular bonuses. But perhaps my favorite feature would have to be Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews on The Dick Cavett Show. I always enjoy watching this classic Dick Cavett Shows. So this addition really is awesome. But Kino Lorber didn't even stop there. The Blu-ray insert is a reversable one with two different kinds of artwork. I love the artwork so for me this is a truly wonderful bonus feature.
Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau was simply comedy genius. Being able to see A Shot in the Dark in perfect picture quality is a great joy. So, if you enjoy A Shot in the Dark and you've been watching it on the old DVD. Why not upgrade to this new Blu-ray release for your home video library. You won't regret it!
