There has been a resurgence of musicals in this generation. We have seen Wonka, Wicked and Mufasa: The Lion King, just to name a few. But most musicals now are a family affair. But it is cool to see musicals coming back to the forefront.
In early Hollywood musicals were big business, but as the decades progressed movie audiences seemed not so interested in musicals but wanted more action and adventure. But in 1982 an all-star cast was brought together for a hilarious musical for the adults was born.
That film was The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Now Kino Lorber's KL Studio Classics have released this cult classic on Blu-ray from a brand-new HD Master and adding some wonderful bonus features as well.
Synopsis: The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas documents in rousing song and dance, a new Texas legend, which now joins the Alamo as a historical institution, immortalized in story, song, book, play and movie. The demise of the real-life Chicken Ranch inspired the hit stage musical, and now this boisterous big-screen adaptation headed by superstar Burt Reynolds (Smokey and the Bandit) as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd and red-hot country legend Dolly Parton (9 to 5) as the Chicken Ranch’s proprietress, Miss Mona. The two join together not only in romance, but to fight big-city TV crusader Melvin P. Thorpe (Dom DeLuise, The Cannonball Run) in his efforts to expose the Chicken Ranch to public scandal, and thus close it down. The mighty Charles Durning (The Sting) earned an Oscar nomination (Best Supporting Actor, 1982) as the Governor of Texas in this irresistible Southern-fried classic from filmmaker Colin Higgins (Harold and Maude, Foul Play, 9 to 5). Show-stopping musical numbers include “Sneakin’ Around,” “Hard Candy Christmas,” and Dolly’s eternal ballad, “I Will Always Love You.” Y’all come back now, you hear?
This film s defiantly a film from a different era. Without a doubt! I don't see this film ever getting greenlit by a major studio. But there is no doubt about its hilarious scenes. One of the stand outs for me Charles Durning as the Governor as he skirts the issue. This scene has to be seen to be appreciated.
Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton have a good chemistry. I am surprised they didn't make more films together. And what can you say about the supporting cast? It features amazing performances by Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle USMC), Theresa Merritt (That's My Mama) and Dom DeLuise (Fatso). In addition, Jim Nabors is spectacular as the narrator.
This film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and a lossless audio track in 2.0 and there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This transfer is not just any transfer either. This one comes from a brand-new HD Master – From a 2K Scan of the 35mm Interpositive.
The crispness and clarity of this film on Blu-ray is hard to believe. If you have ever seen this film on TV or DVD watching it on this Blu-ray in HD is going to give you a new appreciation for this film. The colors are vibrant, the audio is clear. But a wonderful looking transfer is not all this Blu-ray has going for it. Check out the bonuses included.
