It is hard to believe but at the time of this review Batman is 86 years old! Bruce Wayne and his alter ego the Dark Knight first came to life in the comics on March 30th, 1939. With that many years of adventures, ideas can run a bit thin. So there is need for new ideas.
So, the Warner Brothers Animation team has been taking Bruce Wayne and putting his in new and unique places and times. Most notably 2018 Batman was transported back to feudal Japan, and we got the animated film Batman Ninja. Than in 2025 we saw its sequel Batman Ninja Versus The Yakuza League.
Well, after the success of these two films it was time to reimagine Batman in a new way. So, Warner Bros. Animation thrust him into the past to the Astec culture, and we got the film, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires
Synopsis: In a bold reimagining of the Batman legend set in the Aztec empire; a young Aztec boy escapes to Tenochtitlan after his father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. There; he trains in the temple of the bat god Tzinacan; and develops weaponry to avenge his father's death. Along the way; he encounters familiar figures like Jaguar Woman and the conquistador Hernan Cortes.
I love the look of the animation. I get so tired of bad CGI 3D animation. This animation has the more classic feel to it. Aztec Batman is an ambitious film. I enjoyed the take on Joker, but somehow for me Batman in the Aztec Empire just felt off. Plus, the story felt a bit disjointed and jumped around too much making it harder to follow.
It is good to note also that Aztec Batman is not for the children this film is violent, blood and at times kind of scary. This film is for mature audiences. The scenes in this film could give young audience members nightmares. So, keep that in mind.
Warner Brothers has transferred Aztec Batman to 4K in 2160p and is presented in widescreen format. There are two audio options an English DTS-HD MA English 5.1 and a Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1. Finally, there are subtitles in English and Spanish.
Aztec Batman looks and sounds stunning in UltraHD! The animation really benefits from the 4K treatment. The clarity and crispness of the pictures is spectacular, and the chase scenes are as clean as can be. This is a tremendous transfer! In addition to a tremendous transfer there are some cool bonus features included on this release.
Special Features:
* The Battle Cry of Aztec Batman
* The Batman Mythology and Aztec Inspiration
* Bonus Digital Copy of Aztec Batman
I really enjoyed the bonus featurettes. It is cool to see why the producers thought the Aztec Culture would be a good fit for Batman. Also, the addition of the digital copy of the film makes for a wonderful bonus.
If you enjoy the DC Animated Universe as much as I do Aztec Batman on 4K UltraHD would make a great addition to your collection. Even with its flaws it is still an entertaining piece of cinema.
