Tunnel Vision (1976) Blu-ray Review

Saturday Night Live and SCTV were two groundbreaking sketch comedy shows in the 70s. All comedy that came has been influenced by these shows. In 1976 stars of SNL and SCTV were brought together to bring the world a film like nothing we had seen before. That film was entitled Tunnel Vision.

When thinking of Tunnel Vision and what Blu-ray distributor would be the best for this, I couldn't think of a better label that MVD Rewind Collection. MVD Rewind gives movies that retro VHS style feel but yet giving the film the best picture quality possible. So yes, MVD Rewind is the perfect label to give this film a chance to live on Blu-ray forever.

Synopsis: It's the year '1985' and the proprietors of new television channel called 'TunnelVision', which is notably free of censorship) are under a government investigation led by a Senator who wishes to shut down the network due to its widespread negative effects on the population. During the hearing, the committee examines a typical day or programming which includes shows, programs, commercials, news, and much more, and what they discover will surely crack you up in this outrageous and irreverent spoof of 1970's movies and television in the tradition of Kentucky Fried Movie and Amazon Women on the Moon!

Tunnel Vision is not SNL or SCTV this is a R rated comedy so there is a good amount of profanity and adult content. But for adults this is going to be a real fun ride. The cast in this film is a whos who of 70s TV and film. The all-star cast featuring Chevy Chase (National Lampoon's Vacation), John Candy (Uncle Buck), Al Franken (Stuart Saves His Family), Laraine Newman (Coneheads), Howard Hesseman (WKRP in Cincinnati), Ron Silver (Timecop) and Lynne Marie Stewart ('It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia')

For me the highlight is seeing Dr. Johnny Fever the freewheeling, happy-go-lucky disc jockey of WKRP, being the stuff shirt senator bound and determined to shut down the TV network he deems offensive. The film runs just over an hour and that is perfect, as the film doesn't stay to long wearing out its welcome!

MVD has transferred TunnelVision to Blu-ray in 1080p. The film is presented in both 1.66:1 anamorphic and 1.33:1 full frame. The audio track is LPCM 2.0 Mono. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. But this isn't just any Blu-tray transfer. This transfer comes from a new 4K scan. The film looks really nice. Even when you think the sketches were shot on video. This film looks remarkable in HD!

Now 2 versions of this film a widescreen and full screen version is pretty nice. But the Rewind Collection always goes a little further to bring us physical media fans the best value for our money. Check out the bonus features included on this Blu-ray.

* New! Feature Commentary from Cult Film Historian Marc Edward Heuck

The audio commentary is really a wonderful listen, and the new interview is a welcomed new bonus as well. The retro slipcover is so cool! It looks like an old VHS tape you would have got at the rental store complete with Be-Kind Re-Wind and 5 Day rental on it. And the reversible Blu-ray insert is awesome with different artwork.

Now granted the offbeat wacky humor found in Tunnel Vision, won't be everyone's cup of tea. But for those that do enjoy that type of humor. This is going to be quite that ride. And if you want to see it in the best version possible, with great bonuses this Blu-ray is perfect for you!
