In the early days of cinema there was one dartling of the silver screen. Everyone wanted to see her. That actress was Mary Pickford. No wonder she was nicknamed America's Sweetheart. Even after all these years her films are still studied and revered.
VCI Entertainment and MVD Visual have released one of her best films fully restored and now in HD on Blu-ray. That film is 1921's The Love Light. It is hard to believe that this film is over 100 years old. But now we can celebrate the beauty and elegance of Mary Pickford in HD for generations to come.
Synopsis: During the first World War, a young Italian woman, Angela Carlotti (Mary Pickford), who tends the local lighthouse and falls in love with a man she rescues from the sea. Her small village suffers devastating losses from the war, and when Angela realizes her lover is a German spy, the story takes a dramatic and unexpected turn. Angela must come to terms with her mistakes and set things right while finding her strength through such troubled times. Angela's bravery and beautiful spirit bring love and light into the lives of those around her, giving hope for a brighter future after so much pain and heartache.
The Love Light has never been seen in its entirety until this release. In 2021 on its 100th birthday the Mary Picford Foundation and the UCLA Library of film and television archive began a painstaking restoration of this film. Bringing it back to its full length and restoring it in 4K!
100 years ago, no one would have ever dreamed of Blu-ray ad 4k discs playing films at home. So, these films were thought only to be seen during a theatrical run. That is why these films were not stored in the best conditions. Thus, the degradation of most of these films. It never ceases to amaze me at the quality of the work of these restorations. The Love Light looks simply amazing on Blu-ray. All of the dirt, tears and scratches have been cleaned up and made this film looks spectacular.
This new 4k restoration has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a LPCM 2.0. But a beautifully restored version of the film is not all that is included here. VCI Entertainment and MVD Visual added some cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included.
* Commentary track by Marc Wanamaker, author and film historian
* Liner notes and Pictorial booklet by the Mary Pickford Foundation
* Extensive Photo Gallery
* Friends, an American Biograph short film released September 1912. Newly remastered in HD with an original score by Mariah Manser
Marc Wanamaker does wonderful job telling us so much about Mary Pickford, writer/director Frances Marion, other actors in this film. the booklet insert is great giving us so much more information about this great film. Then the addition of the short film Friends is a very welcomed addition to this Blu-ray.
It would be easy to forget these silent films, but if we ignore them, we ignore the great performances of actors and actresses that paved the way for all the actors that came after them. VCI Entertainment is not willing to let them be forgotten, and I appreciate that so very much.
So, if you love the silent era of films as much as I do. This new Blu-ray of the Love Light is a must own for your collection. Head over to MVD Shop or Amazon and order your copy today. You will be amazed at how great this film looks in HD!
