Ghostbusters has been trending at the time of this review. All because of Ghostbusters Frozen Empire film release has seen this film receive the #1 spot at the Box office. But for me I will always be a huge fan of the original two films.
But as I grew up, I remember watching reruns of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. Watching these ghostly adventures with animated versions of the characters I saw in those amazing films and the edition of an even more cool Slimer. Too Cool!
After The Real Ghostbusters ended its television run. In 1997 the world was clamoring for all new adventures. So thus, was born a new series Extreme Ghostbusters. Now Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have released this short-lived series on DVD.
Years after the events of The Real Ghostbusters, the original Ghostbusters crew have all moved on to different careers -- except for Egon Spengler. After a prolonged quiet period, Egon is now a college professor on the paranormal and the sole caretaker of the firehouse -- and Slimer. When supernatural activity suddenly resurges across New York and once again threatens the city, he recruits the help of four college students to form an all-new Ghostbusters team.
Extreme Ghostbusters brought a new life to the idea of Ghostbusters. We saw different races represented here and even a paraplegic character. The only original characters of the original series that return include Egon and Janine. Slimer of course returns but he seems different.
The voice actors in this series will be so recognizable. They include, Tara Strong (Teen Titans Go), Maurice LaMarche (Pinky and The Brain), Jason Marsden (Step by Step), Alfonso Ribeiro (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), Rino Romano (The Batman) and Billy West (Futurama).
Extreme Ghostbusters really pushed what would be considered kid-friendly cartoon in the 90s. While maybe not as great as The Real Ghostbusters, this is a tremendously fun series. It really is underrated. Now sadly this series only lasted 1 season, a total of 40 episodes.
The whole seasons of Extreme Ghostbusters have been transferred to DVD. The 40 episodes are spread across 9 Discs. These episodes are presented in their original full screen format in 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio is English stereo audio and there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
When watching these episodes on this release the first couple of episodes seemed to see a bit less than crisp. Now that doesn't mean that they were unwatchable or bad. Most people wouldn't even notice that these episodes were not as sharp, but as the series continued the episodes got sharper.
Extreme Ghostbusters I feel is a really underrated cartoon series. I am so glad Sony decided to release this short lived series on DVD. It makes a perfect companion piece to the original movies and Real Ghostbuster Animated series. Physical media and animations fans will love this release.
