Screwball Comedies! I love the absurdity of these type of films. One of my favorites is the classic goofball comedy "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World". I have watched this film so many times! It never seems to get old to me!
In 1966 there was another goofball comedy featuring an all-star cast, just like "Mad World". This film was The Russians are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. Now the good folks at Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics are releasing this film on Blu-ray!
When a sightseeing Soviet commander runs his submarine aground off the New England coast, the crew’s attempts to find a boat to dislodge them almost start World War III! In his first major film role, Alan Arkin (The In-Laws) leads an all-star cast—in this uproarious Cold War comedy classic! Russian Lt. Rozanov (Arkin) and his crew hit the beaches of Massachusetts unaware of the panic they’re about to start. Despite the Russians’ harmless intentions, the folks in town think a full-scale Soviet invasion has been launched! What’s worse, their police chief has left his hysterical assistant in charge…and the one man who knows the truth is only stirring up more chaos!
This film is a wonderful satire of the Cold War. If you have ever watched It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World written by William Rose, well, you know what your getting in this film also written by Rose. There is so many crazy scenes that are simply hilarious and yet the film is saying something very profound!
The cast is amazing! We see such amazing talent as, Carl Reiner (The Dick Van Dyke Show), Eva Marie Saint (On The Waterfront), Brian Keith (The Parent Trap), Jonathan Winters (Mork and Mindy) and Alan Arkin (Wait Until Dark) just to name a few!
The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming have been transferred to Blu-Ray in 1080p in 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Seeing this film on Blu-ray is pretty awesome! The picture is crisp and clean and the colors are bright and vibrant and the audio is clear. I saw no digital artifacts or damage to this film print and audio was devoid of any hiss or pops. Kino Lorber has produced a film transfer that is something special. But they also added some cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included!
• NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians Michael Schlesinger and Mark Evanier
• Making-of Featurette hosted by Norman Jewison
• Theatrical Trailer
The audio commentary has a lot of good information included, but to me the best bonus feature is the Making-of Featurette. There is so much awesome material in this featurette, including going into detail on how producers had to make a submarine as the United States and the Russians couldn't get together to get the producers to have this prop! Fascinating featurette! A Must Watch!
