The Groom Wore Spurs (1951) Blu-ray Review

When you think of Ginger Rogers most film fans would think those amazing musicals where she starred alongside Fred Astaire. But Ginger Rogers was defiantly more than just a fine dancer she could play dramatic roles and even mix in some fun with comedic roles.

In 1951 director Richard Whorf got the great Ginger Rogers to star alongside Jack Carson for a romantic comedy The Groom Wore Spurs. Not this comedy film has been released on Made-on-Demand Blu-ray from Shoreline Entertainment.

Hollywood Singing cowboy Ben Castle (Jack Carson, Arsenic and Old Lace) hires lawyer "A.J." Furnival (Ginger Rogers, Top Hat) to get him out of his gambling debts that he incurred in Las Vegas. Castle has a genius plan marry A.J. and have the man he is indebted to (who is found of A.J.) forgive the debt! But will this all backfire on Ben? You will have to see the film to find out!

The Groom Wore Spurs is a nice little comedy film. Jack Carson and Ginger Rogers have a very fun chemistry on film. In addition to them, it was so cool to see the hilarious Joan Davis in this film. Many classic TV fans know her from her television series "I Married Joan". She really brings the fun up a few notches.

The Groom Wore Spurs has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in 1,78:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The film transfer is a bit soft in the picture. It's not crisp and sharp as I had hoped. And the audio is a tad tinny. Now while that is the truth of the transfer, I don't want to discourage anyone from this release. It is not a bad looking print. There is not any damage to the print that I could see. So that is a major plus!

Now as for bonus features, this is a bare bones release. There is no audio commentary or interviews or even a trailer. Then in addition, this disc is not a pressed disc. It is a made-on-demand Blu-ray!

Even with all of those "faults" this film is still a lot of fun and looks nice in HD. A new restoration and bonus features would have made this disc so much better. But it would still make a nice addition to a physical media fans classic comedy wing!

So, if you love classic 50s comedies as much as I do The Groom Wore Spurs would make a nice addition to your collection. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today!
