Contagion (2011) 4k UltraHD Review

While the government has called an end to the Covid pandemic, the sickness still lives on! It is still a scary time in our world! People are still getting sick and dying! And yet at the time of this writing we are 4 years removed from the outbreak!

Just under a decade years before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2011 Steve Soderbergh directed a film about a pandemic. Now Warner Brothers Home Entertainment have released this thriller on 4K UltraHD! 

Soon after her return from a business trip to Hong Kong, Beth Emhoff dies from what is a flu or some other type of infection. Her young son dies later the same day. Her husband Mitch however seems immune. Thus begins the spread of a deadly infection. For doctors and administrators at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, several days pass before anyone realizes the extent or gravity of this new infection. They must first identify the type of virus in question and then find a means of combating it, a process that will likely take several months. As the contagion spreads to millions of people worldwide, societal order begins to break down as people panic.

Watching this film now is a whole different thing than it was when fans watched it when it first came out. Let's be honest this film was a sci-fi fantasy, or at least we thought it was. No one would have ever dreamed we would have ever seen a pandemic, yet we saw it! It is really eerie how this film feels like a Covid documentary.

Contagion is a well, written and well directed film. Steven Soderbergh put together a cast of amazing actors including, Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), Matt Damon (Oppenheimer), Laurence Fishburn (John Wick: Chapter 4), Jude Law (Peter Pan & Wendy), Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man), Kate Winslet (Black Beauty), Bryan Cranston (Asteroid City), Jennifer Ehle (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Sanaa Lathan (Blade).

Contagion has been transferred to 4K in 2160p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. As for subtitles there is English, French and Spanish.

This new 4K transfer is really sharp and clean. The picture is as crisp as a new 100 dollar bill. The colors bright vibrant and the flesh tones are perfect. To say I am impressed with this transfer would be an understatement. 

Now along with an extremely nice 4k transfer, Warner Brothers added a bonus digital copy of this film that can be redeemed on Movies Anywhere, Vudu Fandango, Youtube or anywhere you redeem your digital movies. Contagion really was a warning! We see people doing anything to survive! Stepping on neighbors and even strangers just to get supplies. Well, during the height of Covid we saw just that. Eerie but defiantly entertaining.
