William Shatner is a renaissance man he has done it all in a career that has spanned seven decades. TV, movies, stage, recordings. He starred in TV shows such as T.J. Hooker, TekWar, 3rd Rock from the Sun, but it probably best known for his time in the captain's chair on the Starship Enterprise as James T. Kirk.
In addition to The Original series and animated series of Star Trek he would star in motion pictures of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. But in the between The Original Series and Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1977 Shatner would face arachnophobia in the movie Kingdom of the Spiders. Now MGM is releasing this film on DVD.
Local veterinarian Rack Hansen (William Shatner) and the sleepy little town of Verde Valley soon find themselves right in the center of an eight-legged nightmare when thousands of tarantulas suddenly mutate and are on the hunt for food!
William Shatner is simply amazing as the macho veterinarian Rack Hansen. The film was so creepy at its time, and I am glad to say that the film almost a half a century later still holds up and has the ability to creep you out. John 'Bud' Cardos directs a real claustrophobic creature feature.
MGM has transferred this creepy crawly classic to Made-On-Demand DVD in widescreen format. The soundtrack is a Dolby Digital 2.0. The film transfer is sharp with no signs of damage to this print that I could see. The audio is clean with no hiss or pops. This is a very nice-looking copy of the film.
Now for bonus features! There is none! It would have been awesome to see and interview with William Shatner about the film, a making of featurette or even a trailer, but it is void of any bonuses. There is not even the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This is a bare bones release.
If you love the creepy film "Arachnophobia" why not check out the film that inspired the film. Kingdom of the Spiders not only creeps out with a ton of tarantulas, but to great to see the great William Shatner that is a win, win all the way around.
Now Kingdom of the Spiders has been released on physical media many times, but if perchance you missed your chance to own one of those releases, MGM is giving you another chance at it. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today!
