The Mean One (2022) Blu-ray Review

The Mean One Blu-ray Cover
The Holidays are never over until we see The Grinch transform. Whether it's the original classic cartoon special or the Jim Carrey live action version, it is absolutely a must see at the holidays.

But there has been a trend in movies and that is to take classic children's shows and make them into a bloody horror films. We have seen it with The Banana Splits, Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey. Now our favorite green grouch is getting his horror film with The Mean One.

Now DeskPop Entertainment are releasing the holiday comedy slasher film The Mean One on DVD and Blu-ray. And right in time for Halloween or the holiday season if you want to hold off watching it till then.

One Christmas Eve in a sleepy mountain town, Cindy’s parents are murdered, and her Christmas is stolen by The Mean One, a bloodthirsty green grouch in a red Santa suit. 20 years later, Cindy returns to Newville, only for The Mean One to launch a bloody reign of terror that threatens to destroy Christmas, lending Cindy a bold new purpose – trapping and killing the monster.

Now while this film takes place in the mountain town of Newville and the monster is simply known as The Mean One. We all know what this is supposed to represent. Director Steven LaMorte came up with the story but had to change things otherwise legal issues would have arisen.

The Mean One is shot on a small budget but takes advantage of every dime. Everyone does a good job in this film, they are all very believable. The Mean One really looks like a psychotic version of Jim Carrey's Grinch.

I wasn't sure how I would feel about this film due to the fact that I hold so much love for The Grinch films. But I found myself entertained with this film. Now by no means is this a great horror film. Far from it, but it is a fun entertaining comedy horror film. And after all you can expect from a film is to be entertained!

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in widescreen format. The audio is a 5.1 surround soundtrack. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. It is good to note this is not a pressed Blu-ray disc, but a BD-R.

Now I wish this would have been a pressed Blu-ray disc but while it may be a burned disc, the film transfer does look pretty impressive. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the picture is crisp and clean and there are no digital artifacts. As for bonus features there are just deleted scenes. I would have liked to see more bonuses, but that is a minor complaint!

While The Mean One may not hold the sustainability of Dr. Suess' classic tale, fans of comedy horror will be thoroughly entertained by this release. Who knows maybe as the years pass this could become a cult classic. Only time will tell!

So, if you love comedy horror films, The Mean One may just be the next film you have been waiting for. Physical Media fans can thank DeskPop Entertainment for releasing this film. Head over to MovieZyng and get your copy of either the DVD or Blu-ray.
