Nevada Smith (1966) Blu-ray Review

Steve McQueen is a legend in Hollywood. He starred in such classic films as Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair, Cincinnati Kid and The Great Escape. But where I was first introduced to Steve McQueen was as a teenager watching the sci-fi horror classic The Blob. 

Most think of Steve McQueen as the action star or the dramatic actor. But he was in quite a few westerns during his career. One of his best westerns would arguably be Nevada Smith. Kino Lorber have decided to release this classic McQueen western on Blu-ray.

Born in 1890s to a Native American mother and a white father during the California gold rush, Nevada Smith has his life turned upside down after he finds that his parents have been murdered by vicious killers. He becomes a lone gunslinger, blinded by his compulsion for revenge, and will stop at nothing to show the killers his own brand of justice.

Nevada Smith is an emotional adventure. Beyond the star studded cast of Steve McQueen, Karl Malden, Brian Keith, Arthur Kennedy, Suzanne Pleshette, Raf Vallone, Janet Margolin, Howard Da Silva, Pat Hingle, Gene Evans abd Martin Landau. The real star is the stunning landgscapes brought to us by the cinematographer Lucien Ballard.

Nevada Smith has been transferred to Blu-ray on 1080p in 2.35:1 aspect ratio and is from a brand new 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negetive. The audio is A DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf andf hard of hearing.

Nevada Smith has never looked as crisp and clean as it does now. This new 4K scan bring new life to this classic western. It is that good.

In additon to a extremly nice 4K Scan of this classic western. Kino Lorber added a very interesting  Audio Commentary by Author/Screenwriter C. Cortney Joyner, Producer Mark Jordan Legan and Film Historian Henry Parke.

Nevada Smith is not considered in the liste of best westerns of all time, and while I understand there is a lot of great westerns. I think Nevada Smith deserves more love that it gets. I apprecuate Kino Lorber giving this film a chance to thrive on Blu-ray featuring this 4K scan.
