Magic Cop (1990) Blu-ray Review

88 Films have been releasing some amazing Asian films on Blu-ray and 4K releases. This year we have seen Jackie Chan film's Gorgeous and Police Story 3 and the simply amazing 4 movie box set In the Line of Duty.

But now it is time for another amazing Blu-ray release. This time around we are seeing the release of the supernatural horror comedy adventure from 1990 entitled Magic Cop.

After seeing off hopping corpses in Mr. Vampire, the great Lam Ching-ying (Enter the Dragon, Eastern Condors) faces a new supernatural challenge: someone is using the living dead to smuggle drugs into modern day Hong Kong and only Lam's Officer Feng - policeman and Taoist master - can stop them, proving the power of traditional Chinese magic in the process!

Magic Cop is an extremely interesting and entertaining little film. Where most Asian films go for lengthy fight scenes to bring the action to a whole new level, Magic Cop is different. Lam Ching-ying's uses his superior combat skills to cause short but cool action sequences. So martial art film fans be aware while there is some action it is not as much as you would be used to!

Magic Cop has been transferred to Blu-ray in High Definition (1080p) and presented in 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio. As for the audio options there are four. A 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio Original Cantonese Mono Mix, a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio Cantonese Home Video Mix, a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio English Surround Dub and a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio English Dub.

88 Films have been impressive to say the least and Magic Cop's transfer to Blu-ray is no different. The picture is sharp, and the colors are bright. There is only some minor scratches. So, this is not a pristine looking transfer, but this should not deter from the enjoyment of this film.

Now probably as readers know by now I love the bad English dubs. So that takes this release to new heights. In addition to the exciting film on Blu-ray, 88 Films added some extremely cool bonuses features to this release, as they do with all their releases. Take a look at what is included.

* Double Walled Gloss Finish O-ring featuring new artwork by Sean Longmore (First Pressing Only) (3000)

* Double-sided foldout poster (First Pressing Only) (3000)

* Audio commentary with Hong Kong Film Experts Frank Djeng and Marc Walkow

* Taiwanese Cut with Alternate Score (SD)

* Interview with Stephen Tung Wei (HD)

* Image Gallery

* Trailer

* Reversible cover with new artwork by Sean Longmore and original HK Poster Art

I love the physical additions to these releases. I think it is so cool seeing reversible artwork. And the mini posters are such a nice bonus. I cannot tell you how much I love them. Then on disc bonuses of a nice interview and a very interesting audio commentary. All these cool bonuses make up for the less than pristine transfer.
