Blu-ray ReviewThe Experts (1989)

John Travolta first gained attention from his role in the TV Series Welcome Back Kotter as the high school delinquent named Vinnie Barbarino. Soon after he would be in the Stephen King film Carrie, than films Saturday Night Fever and Grease.

In 1989 John Travolta would star in comedy film entitled The Experts that spoof the spy movie genre. Now the good folks at Kino Lorber under the division of Kino Lorber Studio Classics are releasing this film on Blu-ray.

The film follows Travis (John Travolta, Pulp Fiction) and Wendell (Arye Gross, Big Eden) two
hip but down-on-their-luck New Yorkers who think they’re relocating to a small town in Nebraska to open a nightclub. What they don’t know is that they’ve been abducted by a KGB operative (Charles Martin Smith, The Hot Spot) to the Soviet Union, where they’ll unwittingly serve as “experts” on all things cool in America. The town, created expressly for KGB spies-in-training, includes seductive agent Kelly Preston (SpaceCamp), who gets into a real undercover situation with Travolta. Eventually, the two Yanks realize they’ve been duped and devise a spectacular escape.

The film was directed by Dave Thomas probably best known for his Emmy award winning role in the sketch comedy show SCTV, or from the the film Strange Brew. Dave Thomas brings his comedy prowess to The Experts making a fast paced off the wall crazy comedy filled with nutty stunts.

Now this film is not The Pink Panther or Get Smart and probably to even compare it is unfair. But when you are doing a spoof spy comedy, you are bound to be put against the best. Watching this film it looks like John Travolta is having a lot of fun in this role! And I think if you don't take it to seriously and just go along for the campy ride you'll enjoy it too!

Kino Lorber has transferred The Experts to Blu-ray in 1080p in the original widescreen format of 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The Audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This new transfer features a brand new
HD Master from a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative by Paramount Pictures. This new 4K scan looks simply amazing. The colors a bright and vibrant and the picture is crisp, the audio is clear. What a great transfer, but that is not all that is included here. There are some pretty nice bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

* NEW Interview with Director Dave Thomas

* Trailers: The Experts (Newly Mastered in 2K), Moment by Moment, Staying Alive, Secret Admirer, Running Scared, Gotcha!, Crackers, The Nude Bomb
