DVD Review: The Round-Up (2022)

When most hear the name Don Lee they will think 2016's Train to Busan. But he has been doing a series of movies known affectionately as "Beast Cop Movies". The latest being The Round-Up!

Now thanks to the good folks at MPI 2022 The Round Up is making it's way to Blu-ray and DVD. Now South Korean films fans can add this adventure film to their collection.

South Korea: Geumcheon Police’s Major Crimes Unit is given a mission to repatriate a fugitive who fled to Vietnam. Beast cop Ma Seok-do (Don LEE) and Capt. Jeon Il-man (CHOI Guy-hwa) intuitively realize that there’s something wrong with the suspect’s willingness to turn himself in and uncover a series of crimes committed by a terrifying killer named Kang Hae-sang (SON Sukku).

The Round-Up is the sequel to the 2017 film The Outlaws. Now while it is a sequel and it takes place 4 years after the event of the previous film, you don't haver to have seen that film to enjoy this one. It is it's own story! The action is great! The acting is pretty good and the direction is fine.

The Round-up has a gritty and real life feel to it. You are taken right into the grimy lives of evil people with the Beast Cop. But just viewer be aware that this film is not for younger audiences this film has violence and adult language, so viewer discretion is advised.

The Round-Up has been transferred in widescreen format in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a Dolby Digital 5.1. You can listen to the original Korean Language track or the dubbed English Language one. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. 

Of course the film is a 2022 release so the picture quality is as expected impressive. The transfer looks great with no DVD artifacting. As for the bonus features on the DVD release. We get the Trailer for The Round-Up and trailers for other films "Ashfall", "Hard Hit" and "The Man Standing Next".

In the final analysis this film is not going to be for every film viewer. This is for a very niche audience. But for those that enjoy South Korean cinema, gritty cop films, or bad English dubbing, ala old Godzilla films. This may be right up your ally.
