Paravision Dreams: The Golden Age 3-D films of Pine and Thomas (1953-1954) {KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review}

William H. Pine and William C. Thomas were co-producers of B-pictures for Paramount Pictures. Pine-Thomas Productions  was prolific to say the least, as there films never lost money. They once said, "We don't want to make million dollar pictures, …We just want to make a million dollars."

In the 1950s Pine-Thomas Productions entered into the world of 3-D features. Now the good folks at Kino Lorber are giving fans the opportunity to own not one, not two, but three 3-D features. Let's take a look at what is included in this set.

Our Rating System:

****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An OK way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.

Sangaree (1953): Dr. Carlos Morales (Fernando Lamas, Dangerous When Wet), son of an indentured servant, who rises to power in the state of Georgia shortly after the Revolutionary War. Romance, political intrigue and a plague outbreak in Savannah highlight this lush historical drama. ***

Those Redheads from Seattle (1953): Four ruby-haired, golden-voiced young women arrive in Alaskan Gold Rush territory to help their father run his newspaper—only to find him murdered. The Klondike gets all fired up as these redheads get work at a saloon and search for the killer. ***

Jivaro (1954): Alice Parker (Rhonda Fleming, Bullwhip) arrives at the Brazilian trading outpost of Rio Galdez (Fernando Lamas, the Merry Widow) in search of her fiancé, an alcoholic engineer who has ventured into treacherous headhunter country on a quest for gold. ***

Along with Fernando Lamas these three features includes many great actors and actresses including; Arlene Dahl (Journey to the center of the Earth),
Patricia Medina (Francis The Talking Mule), Gene Barry (Bat Masterson), Agnes Moorehead (Bewitched, The Bat), Brian Keith (Family Affair, The Parent Trap), Lon Chaney Jr. (The Wolf Man), Richard Denning (Mr. and Mrs. North) and Rita Moreno (West Side Story, One Day At A Time).

These films have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p. Each film gets it's own Blu-ray disc. Sangaree is presented in 1.37:1 while Those Redheads from Seattle and Jivaro are presented in 1.66:1. All three films have a DTS-HD 2.0, but Three Redheads from Seattle has an option for a DTS-HD 3.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I must say every one of these films look and sound amazing! The colors are so gorgeous it looks like something out of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. And if you know me that is one of the highest complements I can give.

Now three gorgeous films would be enough to call this a must buy. But Kino Lorber added some amazing bonus features. Take a look at what is included on each of these discs.

In addition to all these great bonus on disc bonus features. This release includes a slipcover. On the Blu-ray insert on the inside there is a special write-up about Pine and Thomas "The Dollar Bills" a nickname given to the duo for their ability to bring pictures in under budget and always make a profit.

This is one amazing little snapshot of the films of Pine and Thomas. I can not recommend this Blu-ray release enough for people who would like to witness 3-D B-Movie greatness personified.
