On August 16th 1977 the world lost one of the greatest singer and entertainers of all time in Elvis Presley. On the 45th anniversary of his passing I thought it would be nice to look back at one of his movie collections.
In 2008 Warner Brothers Home Entertainment released 4 Presley musicals on a DVD set. This set gave fans just want they expected from Elvis, music, girls and romance. Let's take a look at what is included in this set.
Our Rating System:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An OK way to spend an evening.
*=You haven’t missed anything.
Kissin' Cousin (1964) An Army officer returns to the Smoky Mountains and tries to convince his kinfolk to allow the Army to build a missile site on their land. Once he gets there, he discovers he has a look-alike cousin. ***
Girl Happy (1965) A Chicago mobster hires a rock and roll singer and his band to keep an eye on his daughter during Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. ***
Tickle Me (1965) A singing rodeo rider hires on at an expensive all-women dude ranch and beauty spa. He falls for a pretty fitness trainer who is constantly threatened by a gang who wants her late grandfather's cache of gold hidden in a ghost town. **
Live a little, Love a Little (1968) Photographer Greg Nolan moonlights in two full-time jobs to pay the rent, but has trouble finding time to do them both without his bosses finding out. ***
When I watch a Elvis Presley film I always think one thing. Why didn't the studios give him a chance to try something other than the romance musical? The only thing I can think of is they say a formula that worked and didn't want to mess that up! But I think Elvis has range and could really have gone beyond the girl/boy romance if given the chance.
All of the films are presented in widescreen format and each disc contains English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and the theatrical trailer. For DVD format every film looks and sounds pretty good.
Now there is one real downside for this set in my opinion. Kissin' Cousins and Live A Little Love A Little get a dedicated disc all it's own. However Girl Happy and Tickle Me is pressed on a two sided disc which I loath entirely.
All in all this is still a nice 4 movie set and I recommend it for fans of Elvis or musicals. You can order a copy for yourself at Amazon today.
