I vividly remember my childhood into my teenage years. The things I remember the most is the entertainment. I remember watching Nickelodeon or Nick. I loved the shows like Hey Dude, Clarissa Explains it all, Rugrats, Doug, Ren and Stimpy, and even The Secret World of Alex Mack.
After Clarissa Explains it all Nick was clamoring for another female lead show and thus came the idea for Larisa Oleynik lead teenage super powered show "Alex Mack". Well thanks to the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment the entire series was released on DVD for the first time ever.
The show follows Alex (Larisa Oleynik) a thirteen-year-old girl with all the cares of the normal teenager, trying to fit in, in junior high school and just hoping to feel ordinary. But those hope are soon dashed away when a truck crash causes a chemical spill.
Alex is splashed in the experimental chemical and she is biologically altered giving her amazing powers including, the ability to liquefy herself, turn into a human magnet, move objects and create force fields. Alex must keep her powers a secret from the Hidden Valley chemical plant who wants to find the kid who was hit by the chemical.
This was an entertaining show and for that matter still is. But it is for those certain ones that grew up on the show. It holds a lot of nostalgia. But for people who didn't grow up in the 90s this is may not be as entertaining. The special effect by today's standards are a bit cheesy, but to me that just makes it all the more fun.
The show lasted all of 4 seasons and we saw Alex Mack grow from a young girl to near adulthood. It was so popular that Nick offered Larisa a season 5, an Alex Mack movie and a lot of money. But she stated she wanted to keep her character innocent, she was burnt out and wanted to finish high school. Who could blame her for that? But long after that, that she would become Tommy's girlfriend Alissa Strudwick on 3rd Rock from the Sun.
The episode are presented in their originally 1.33 full frame presentation, the audio is a Dolby Digital 2.0. These shows have not been remastered in HD, but for what they are they look pretty good. All 78 episodes are stretched over 6 discs. These are dual layer discs so there is plenty of space for these episodes to breathe.
