Street Fighter {Mill Creek Entertainment SteelBook Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Street Fighter was a still is a huge thing for video game fans. But in 1990 there was a huge market for video games to be made into movie features. It was truly big business.

So in 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme took the reigns of the Street Fighter world alongside the great Raul Julia as the yin to his yang. This film has become a cult classic. Now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment having given this film a SteelBook release it so richly deserves.

The film follows Gen. Bison (Raul Julia), the evil dictator of Shadaloo, who captures a busload of relief workers and than holds them for ransom. It is up to an international strike force lead by Col. Guile (Jean-Claude Van Damme) to rescue the hostages. As part of this force is Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen), a reporter and martial-arts expert whose father was killed by Bison years ago, two con men (Damian Chapa, Byron Mann) and a sumo wrestler (Peter Navy Tuiasosopo).

Steven E. De Sousa worked on many iconic film scripts though his career and he wrote the screenplay for Street Fighter. But what makes this even more amazing is he directed the film and it was his directorial debut, and what a debut it was.

I would have found it very hard to adapt the video game into a feature film. But I feel De Sousa made a fan and entertaining film. There is a campiness to the feature that makes it so much fun, but die hard fans of the Street Fighter games may not be entertained by the comedy.

This cult classic has been transferred in 1080p in widescreen 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also in addition English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Street Fighter looks amazing on this Blu-ray. The colors are vibrant and the pictures is crisp with clear audio.
