Resurrecting the Champ (2007) {Blu-ray Review}

Being a boxer is a really tough life. For every Marciano or Ali there are hundreds of other men who's lives were destroyed by the violence of the sport. Brains are scrambled. Bodies are broken. And lives are cut short. Yes boxing is one tough sport.

In 2007 Samuel L. Jackson took the role of a boxer who's life had been destroyed by the sport. "Resurrecting the Champ" was based on a true account. Now the good folks at MVD Marquee Collection is giving this film a blu-ray release it deserves.  

The film follows sportswriter Erik Kernan (Josh Hartnett) wants nothing more than to discover a story great enough to make headlines. So when he meets Champ (Samuel L. Jackson), a former boxing champion living on the streets, he knows he has a shot to save them both. Recording his newfound friend's unbelievable tale of triumph and defeat, Kernan gets his story and his fame. But as Champ's tale falls under more scrutinizing eyes, Kernan will have to learn that what truly makes a story great is the quality of the man behind it.

This film is a poignant, heart tugging, thought provoking film. The direction of Rod Lurie and screenplay by Micheal Bortman was masterfully done. Samuel L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett do a remarkable job as the leads in this film. But besides them this film boasts an cast of amazing actors and actresses including; Alan Alda, Kathryn Morris, Teri Hatcher, David Paymer and Peter Coyote.

blu-ray release the film has transferred from the original film element presented in High Definition widescreen format and 2.35:1 aspect ratio. As for the audio there is English 5.1 Dolby Surround, French 5.1 Dolby Surround. And finally English, Spanish and French Subtitles.

The video and audio quality of this release looks amazing. When your on the backsides of the mean streets you really feel the grit and grim of those streets. Than when your in the newspaper building you can almost smell the newspaper. It is that clear, you feel as though your there.

  • It is good to note this film is not for the children. There is a fair amount of profanity in this film. There is also an conversation in the film where some racial slurs are uttered. But this is a very good dramatic presentation.
