Barbershop (2002) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By: Jason Lockard

Rapper Ice Cube went from making music to making movies! Some of which were very family friendly fare. Others not-so-much! One of those films that are a little more for adults is Barbershop. Now the good folks at MVD have released this first film in the Barbershop franchise on Blu-ray via the MVD Marquee collection.

The film follows Calvin
Palmer, Jr. (Ice Cube), he has been running his family's barbershop in South side Chicago, but he's got bigger plans! He wants to be a music producer and wants to build a music studio, but to do that he needs money! So when he finds the bank is going to foreclose on the barbershop on an impulse he sells the Barbershop to a shady loan shark. Calvin soon realizes just how important the barbershop is to the neighborhood and to him. He must get it back, but how?! You'll have to see the film to find out!

This film features an all-star cast including; Cedric the Entertainer, Sean Patrick Thomas, Eve and Anthony Anderson just to name a few. Each and every actor puts everything they have in these roles. You can truly tell they believe in the story and that comes through on the screen.

The film is unapologetic about the banter that goes on in most barbershops! It's a place were people go, hang out, discuss, argue, gossip and nothing is off limits!
It is good to note that the banter that goes on in the barbershop could be offensive to some people, so by no means let the younger ones or the sensitive watch this film.

The film transfer on the Blu-ray is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen. The audio is in English 5.1 surround sound and in Spanish in Stereo Surround. The pictures is stunning and the sound is crystal clear.
There is also subtitles in English, French Spanish and Portuguese.

Also this blu-ray is loaded with bonus features! They includes; Audio Commentary by director Tim Story, Producer Robert Teitel, Producer George Tillman, Jr. and Writer Don Scott, Jr., 4 Behind The Scenes Featurettes (aka ''The Hair Club'': A nearly 40-minute documentary that is split into four sections), 7 Deleted Scenes with optional commentary from director Tim Story, Bloopers and Outtakes, ''Trade It All'' Music Video with Fabolous feat. P. Diddy and Jagged Edge, ''Barber Banter'' featurette,  Photo Gallery, and Trailers All the bonus features are in Standard Definition!

In the end I think this film is a very good film that raises questions to talk about, but does it in a funny and entertaining way! So if you love Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer (Who steals the show in my opinion). I highly recommend this Blu-ray release from MVDshop.com.
