The Aftermath (1982)

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

Post Apocalyptic films are big business! They were even in the 80s. So Steve Barkett decided to jump on the bandwagon and make a movie about the world in the aftermath of World War and how the world changed! Now VCI Entertainment has produced a special deluxe edition of The Aftermath on Blu-ray DVD combo pack!

The films follows three astronauts Newman (Steve Barkett), Matthews (Larry Latham), and Williams (Jim Danforth) who are returning to Earth after a long mission. When communication goes down they assume that their equipment is malfunctioning. But when they crash land they discover a cataclysmic event occurred while they were gone. In this new world a violent man named Cutter (Sid Haig) leads a gang of thugs across the landscape, murdering men and taking women and children hostage. Newman feels it's up to him do do something about this madman!

The special effects are OK for the time. But people who are seeing this film don't expect the special effect of today! These are cheesy special effects! I think that is some of the charm of the film. The story however is a tad thin. So the plot seems to drag in places. As it feel like they were trying to get it to be a full length feature! The acting of Steve Barkett and the other actors are Ok! The real standout here is Sid Haig, which is to be expected as he excels as a villain.

The movie looks pretty good on blu-ray. It was taken from the original 35mm negative and is presented in letter-boxed at 1.78:1. The image is very sharp and clear, showing only mild grain and scant defects. The audio crystal clear, but the soundtrack is a bit odd to me, but that is a minor flaw.

Than there is the bonus features included in this set. First you get the director’s commentary taking you behind the scenes of the making of this film. You get original laserdisc video Supplements featuring bonus interviews, behind-the-scenes photos and more! That is a huge plus! I am glad that VCI added that to this release! International Sales Promo, Isolated - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and a huge bonus “Night Caller” – a short student film produced by Steve Barkett (never seen before), based on a story by Ray Bradbury.

This film is not for the young ones or even the teens there is a good amount of violence, scenes of rape and brief nudity so do keep that in mind! This blu-ray is a must own for fans of post apocalyptic horror films. But what makes this the must is the loaded bonus features.
